have just had to do a restore on my 4S (to the last back up, which was only 24hrs old) but now cannot connect/sync to iTunes due to the above error.
still running iOS 7.1.2 on 4S
itunes is v11.4
Any ideas?

thanks. i'll look into that, but i don't think its quite the same.
using a MB Pro, so not much in way of firewall and antivirus
and not intentionally trying to download purchased content either - was trying to add music manually from iTunes library to phone

I was getting the same error, so I disabled Wi-Fi calling on my iPhone (Settings - Phone - Wi-Fi Calling).
So far I haven't been getting that error again.
iTunes could not check for an update to the carrier settings for your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (-50).
