Unable to use App-Specific Password with 3rd party email clients?

Using Thunderbird or MailMate to access my iCloud email no longer works with the App-Specific Password.

I get told that Authentication failed.

If I connect directly to iCloud's IMAP server with:

openssl s_client -connect imap.mail.me.com:993

And after connecting and see SSL and other connection details scroll by, I get

* OK [CAPABILITY st11p00mm-iscream035 14G XAPPLEPUSHSERVICE IMAP4 IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR AUTH=ATOKEN AUTH=PLAIN] iSCREAM ready to rumble (14G:3845) st11p00mm-iscream035 [49:2609:13:10:22:B3]

Upon which I attempt to enter

0 LOGIN myusername myAppSpecificPassword

Only to get

0 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed

The only unusual thing I can think of is that my iCloud username ends with an underscore.

Any thoughts?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem because I'm stumped?

My iCloud user name is only letters, and it doesn't work either. I tried using my user name, both alone and with email address, as well as my login email, and nothing works. I'm trying to log in with Postbox, which works flawlessly with emails from two different hosting accounts so I know it's not the application.
