Q: Connected to network, but web browsers do not work

I cannot connect to the internet using Safari or Chrome using my ethernet connection. It says the connection is active and I can connect to the network (file copy via terminal, mac mail works, school's intranet website's work etc.), but I cannot browse the web. If I turn OFF the ethernet and ON the wireless I can browse the web. I upgraded to Mavericks (iOS 10.9.5) recently and everything has been slower. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Are you sure the school allows internet access to devices on the ethernet? Consult your network admin for confirmation.
The Wifi can be setup differently it's possible a proxy or other filter is blocking access.
If you have incorrect DNS servers set too that can make things fail. A network admin will know what the settings should be on a school network.
