Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Why is my IPod duplicating some tracks on a few cd's? Is this a common problem?

Why is my IPod Classic duplicating tracks on some CD's? It appears to be random. Is this the norm now?

Am currently travelling at the moment but have logged into my account and viewed the cd's I have purchased. All the tracks are showing correctly and not duplicated although some are duplicated on the IPod. Will not be able to check the uploaded cd's until I return. Could the latest I-Tunes update be the problem? I downloaded that on my desktop at home but not on the laptop I am using? Just a thought.........

FYI, you should call what you have on your computer the iTunes library, not "account," to avoid possible confusion. Your iTunes account is your Apple ID, which is what you use to sign to the iTunes Store to buy and download stuff.

Are all of your song files stored in ONE iTunes Media folder, or are they stored in different locations? Open iTunes preferences Advanced tab. Your iTunes Media folder location is shown there. The default location is in your user home folder's Music folder. I have mine on an external hard drive.

There are two checkboxes there. The second setting is Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. If that setting is checked, when you add songs to your iTunes library manually (not through the iTunes Store), iTunes makes a copy of each song files and puts it in the iTunes Media folder for use with iTunes. The original copy stays at the location where you added it. Therefore, you now have two copies of the song file on your computer's drive. So, perhaps you inadvertently added songs that where already in your iTunes library, when you later added new songs manually. NOTE: If that setting is NOT checked, iTunes uses the song file at the location where you added it.

If you restored your iTunes library from multiple backups (after a computer "crash"), or by off-loading song files from iPods, some songs may have existed in more than one backup. Therefore, they are now duplicated in your iTunes library.

NOTE: There is a command in iTunes to Show Duplicate Items. From the menu bar, View -> Show Duplicate Items. Keep in mind that "duplicates" are songs with the same name by the same artist. They may be different performances of the same song, or the same song on different albums. So, you'll still have to go through each occurrence of a duplicate carefully; some duplicates are intentional.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.

Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning

to backup your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

I found your thread as I searched for a solution to the same problem.

I've noticed that I had itunes match turned off for about 2 or 3 weeks and this problem didn't happen. I had it earlier this year when Match was on. Over the weekend I re-activated itunes match and the same CD I've had problems with is duplicating again.

Do you happen to have itunes match activated? Perhaps that is the common thread that may be causing our problems?

I will need to play around more tonight with it. I know I've deleted this before, re-synced, etc.

(PS: This issue happened to me on my iphone.)

Why is my IPod duplicating some tracks on a few cd's? Is this a common problem?
