Unused iCloud account keeps asking for password . . .

Every ten minutes or so my work is interrupted by this message:

"Your iCloud password for [account name] is incorrect. Please ensure you are entering the correct password for your iCloud account."

I don't use that account anymore and have iCloud linked to a different one. I've also tried entering the my iCloud password and the old account password and these are rejected. It's driving me crazy trying to work steadily with the interruptions. If necessary, I'd like to drop all links iCloud just to get rid of this situation.

Questions:

How can I delete this old iCloud account?

Failing that, how can I uncouple or trash my links to iCloud and start over . . . . or not.

Thanks.

Hi, Eric

The iCloud account that that keeps popping up is my old one, with an email account that no longer exists. The syncing/de-syncing menu is grayed out and can't be activated.

When I enter the password for the old (non-existent) account it says that for security reasons I must create a new password. They offer a choice of emailing me or using the security questions. They email, evidently, to my non-existent account, so I can't receive it, and -- believe it or not -- when I answer the first security question for my birth date, it says what I enter is not correct. I've tried both alternatives several times with the same results. If only my parents knew . . .

So I'm checkmated. I just want to clean up the whole iCloud mess and start again. Do you think I should contact Apple and see if they can sort it out?

Thanks again.
