file rename with counting from 0 instead of 1

I have Aperture, the latest update installed.

I need to rename small series of pictures to XXXXXXXX_00.jpg, XXXXXXXX_01.jpg and so on. (I copy/paste the XXXXXXXX from a list of productcodes in Numbers)

The only solution so far is to rename the first to XXXXXXXX_00.jpg with the 00 as custom text and to rename the following 6 or so to XXXXXXXX_01.jpg,...,XXXXXXXX_06.jpg

Does anyone have a clue how to do this at one go and set the file renaming to Customname_Counter00. Aperture only lets you use Counter01 :-(

Any help is appreciated

If you do a lot of file renaming — or come across something Aperture won't do — have a look at Name Mangler. I've renamed millions of files — it's a superb utility, useful for _any_ renaming, from the dead simple to customized actions with hundreds of steps.

Just a happy customer. Many Tricks does nice work. I use Moom and Witch all day long every day, and Leech as needed.

OK this *&?# site just ate my reply 😠 Lets try again.

I just tried the export and you are right, as an export it starts at 1 not 0. Where I got tripped up is if you use the preset to rename the versions it will start at 0.

So a work around is to rename the versions using the counter preset, making sure you reset it to 0 each time or it will begin with the last number, and then export the versions using the Current Version Name preset. An extra step but not to onerous.

Here is an export using the two step procedure.

If you do not want to ranme the versions in the library you could add one more step, duplicate the versions and rename those. Once you are done exporting delete them

Not ideal but no bad. If you try it I think you will see it is a worable solution

Thanks Frank and Léonie,

these are indeed solutions but considering the amount of products and no apparent gain in speed these solutions are not ideal. I will have to try them out on a days work and see how they work out. I like the renaming of the versions for future lookups, although this is not that important. But I think the -1 counter would be faster. But anyway I hate to have to reset the counter all the time...

I have this same problem in Lightroom. Adobe Bridge seems to be the only one to be able to do this in one step and without resetting any counters...

There is another workaround for this. You could export the versions letting Aperture name them _001 to whatever and then run a script on the folder to rename the files, moving 001 to 000, 002 to 001, etc.

It would be a relatively simple script. If you are interested let me know.

Given the current state of Apples support of Aperture it is highly unlikely that this bug will ever be fixed, so unfortunately you will need to pick one of the workarounds. However anything is possible so it would not hurt to reprt this to Apple. Who knoes it should be a relativly easy fix and they have said they will update Aperture for Yosemite. Use Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback to report this.

Thanks Kirby, but I need to do this while exporting with Aperture, and Name Mangler does not seem to be an export plugin...

You might find that channelling your work this way increases your flow 😎 . It is not an Aperture plug-in. Re-naming your Versions seems simpler, though, at least from the data you've given.

Alternatively (and equally un-helpful, I'm afraid): at long last computers are able to count the way people do, and not the way engineers originally set them up — they start with "1". Perhaps you could get the recipient of your carefully prepared files to follow suit.
