No sound on iPhone 6 speaker after using dock connector

I use an Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter to connect my iPhone 6 (running iOS 8.0.2) to an iHome clock radio. After I disconnect my iPhone, the iPhone often thinks that it is still connected. If I play music, podcast, etc. I hear no sound from the iPhone 6. When I swipe up from the bottom and tap on AirPlay, my iPhone 6 indicates that it is still connected to a dock connector, which is of course no longer true. If I turn off the iPhone and turn it on again everything works great, but that is obviously not a perfect solution. Is this just a hardware or software bug that Apple has to fix, or has anyone found a better solution? This never used to be a problem on my iPhone 5s running iOS 7.
