Hi there! This is insane! Bought RINGTONE in iTunes Store on iPhone 5 running iOS 8.3. Tried for 15 mins to activate sound (27 secs) as ringtone. Used your description to change extension to .m4r. Re-import puts the file under music no matter what. iTunes 12.1.2 seems the know the trick. W?T?F???

Result: This does not make any sense! Why would iTunes Store sell ringtones at 0,99 € that only a complete nerd will be able to use on his iPhone by spending 30 mins hacking!? What is the problem here? Does Apple not want their phones to ring in any other sound than the build in tones!?

There is another way which I believe to be much easier judging by the sheer number of steps listed previously.

1) Open garage band, select new project

2) Drag mp3/AAC file into garage band project

3) Trim song to length by clicking and dragging on either end of the blob to get the right section of music. (no more that 40 seconds)

4) Click export to itunes as ringtone

5) sync to phone

I am aware you need a mac to do this so sorry if anyone reading is using a PC.
