Q: Apple -- IOS 8.2 resulted in greyed out WIFI button on a new Iphone 4S. This is a common problem please advise.

I am not due for an upgrade and don't have bucks to buy new phone.  After upgrading to IOS 8, wifi button greyed out.  Wifi is working just fine -- other devices having no problem including another iPhone (not upgraded) and two iPads (neither upgraded).

Apple store ran a test and told me antenna wasn't working and gave me a new 4S (under protection plan).  Wifi was fine and now greyed out. I tried restart and reset.

Not everyone can afford an iPhone 6 please support older hardware as well.

And I hope it continues to work for a long time.  But it's not a permanent fix.  It's a bandage.  The hardware defect that caused the problem originally is still present, and may manifest again.  And if it does, and your hairdryer/freezer trick doesn't work a second time, then you may not get support from Apple because of unauthorized procedures.

    Just FYI.

    I've just noticed your post...

"This is a known issue affecting a very, very small percentage of iPhone 4S units that get a greyed out wi-fi at some point, usually afterany iOS update done over wi-fi.  The most common cause is that the wi-fi chip gets too hot during the update process, and either temporarily disables or burns out permanently.  This also has happened when someone updates/downloads a lot of apps at one time over wi-fi.  Basically, the wi-fi chip runs too hard and too fast for too long, and fails.

It is a hardware issue, not an iOS issue."

    Is this still your understanding?

I have an iPhone 4S bought in November 2015.  I recently upgraded to IOS 8.4 and it seemed to be working fine.

When I woke up on Sunday 12 July 2015, I discovered that the wifi button, in settings, was greyed out and so I cannot connect to any wifi networks.

I have tried resetting the phone and restoring the phone to factory settings - neither of which worked

I plan to visit my local Apple Store in the next couple of days to seek advice.

All I can find online are suggestions to heat up the device and/or put it in the freezer - neither of which sound very sensible to me.

I have the same issue.  My 4S wifi died as soon as I upgraded to OS 8.  So I bought a new 4S from apple - Same thing happened.  Went back to apple got ANOTHER 4S and I'm experiencing the SAME issue again.  IT HAS TO BE SOFTWARE.  I didn't drop it or do anything to it. I had it for A DAY!
