Q: transfer file from iMac using bluetooth to iOS device

file can not be trasnfered using bluetooth from Mac to iPad despite the two are connected already

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8

    Correct, as this is not a supported protocol.

    if a third party app and program offer the feature using the PEN profile then yes out of the box no

    Pre-2012 Macs can't connect with iOS devices via Bluetooth. In 2012 the Bluetooth adapter hardwired into Mac logic boards was upgraded to enable Bluetooth connection with iOS devices. So, transfers with earlier Macs seem limited to iTunes, iPhoto, iCloud, and email attachments -- no clean and simple AirDrop.

     

    I learned this after about an hour on the phone with AppleCare tech support yesterday when I couldn't use AirDrop to transfer a Pages file from my new iPad Air with iOS 8.1.2 to my mid-2011 iMac running the latest Yosemite. AirDrop couldn't correctly identify and connect with my iPad. The systems are appropriate, but, alas, my beloved 27" workhorse is showing its age with no USB 3 and the fresh dental indignity of limited Bluetooth.

     

    It would be helpful if Apple would make this info more readily available. It took a long time for its support team to locate someone familiar with this issue. I've found the info provided by Apple re the iPad,  including the pdf user manual, to be so limited that I had to buy David Pogue's "Missing Manual" for the iPad OS8. Even that worthy tome was unaware of this issue, and has also let me down on other points.
