Seagate Central connection problems

Hello!

Yesterday i bought a seagate central 2TB NAS drive, its connected to my isp provider router (technicolor) by a network cable, i access it over wifi, it appears on finder, i can see the public and user folders and i can copy files to it. My problems start here, time machine won't find it, so i can't make backups with it. And the transfer rates i get copying a large to file are very, very, very slow... under 1MB/sec. Has anybody encountered the same problems. I found another post suggesting to disable Itunes Media and DNLA connection on seagate, which i did, didn't do anything.... Any other suggestions please

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Try hooking the drive directly to the computer to see if you get the same results.

Just be aware you can't backup or run an iPhoto Library from that drive. It will not preserve the ecosystem within the library package of links, files, databases, etc. An iPhoto Library must be stored on a drive formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.

The drive has two connections, one ethernet and one usb, the specifications say that the usb is to add another disk for extra storage. So i guess its only intended to work as a network drive.

It says on the box Mac compatible, itunes compatible and time machine compatible, never mentions anything about the need to reformat. The slow backup i am able to do, is not in the folders format but rather as mounted disk (sparse bundle), but very slow and not using Time machine, using backup buddy.

I should qualify that, it's probably very good, it's just I was sold a turkey. I've tried everything and I can't get time machine to recognise it, I can't backup to it and I'm now just using it as a very expensive and under utilised media library for my Sonos.

I'm sure I'll get more use out of it in the future but since it doesn't do what I want I'm going to buy an A Time Capsule

Apple doesn't officially support network drives except for Time Capsule.

I managed to use it for backups with time machine. I have connected the computer directly to the router, and the seagate also connected to the router as usual, this way my Imac recognizes seagate and mounts the time machine file (sparse bundle), i made the first backup this way. Then i can access it over wifi, the time machine disk does not always apear on finder, but backups are done successfully, Even upgrading to yosemite caused no problems with this setup. It still is slow, but a lot cheaper then time capsule.
