MBP 15" retina display squeezed when hdmi hooked up to tv

Hi-

I have my Macbook Pro 15" Retina hooked up to my Toshiba TV via HDMI cable. When the HDMI cable is plugged in to the mac, my mac's display becomes squeezed so that there is about an inch of black at the top of the bottom of the screen.

Is there any way to have the computer connected to my TV without the computer's screen size changing?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 15"

Hi Sno-Time,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post it appears that when you have an external display plugged in to your MacBook Pro, the screen resolution changes on the Mac to match your TV's display resolution. This is occuring because you have display mirroring turned on, instead of an extended display. Take a look at the support article below for more information with using an external display with your Mac.
