Sign out of the App Store and sign back in. Try to update again. If there's no change, you may be trying to update an app that was bought (or downloaded free of charge) using another Apple ID. Check your purchase history to see whether the app is included. If it isn't, you will either have to sign in with the ID used to buy it, or else delete it and buy it again—and yes, you'll have to pay again.
