Q: iPhone 6, Unknown Error 56, RED iTunes logo, stuck in recovery mode, won't restore, ios 8 - 8.0.2 update fail!

Hi

I just got my new iphone 6 and it was on ios 8 and everything was working fine i guess, i decided to download ios 8.0.2 as it was a brand new phone and i wanted the newest software on it to fix all the bugs just incase i had them.

i started the update process from the phone, and before the update was complete, i'd say 80% or so along the way, the phone goes into recovery mode displaying a red itunes logo and the cable on the screen.i tried all the suggestions out there and even googled and youtubed to try and find a solution with no luck. even did a few searches on this forum as this is the place i usually come to get most of my answers.

here is what i did in attempts to fix this.

tryed restoring through itunes on both recovery mode and DFU mode, with both ios 8.0 and ios 8.0.2 files.

let itunes re-download the update file just incase i had gotten a bad copy the first time around, tried with that

used 3 different computers, 2 macs and 1 pc

switched usb ports

unplugged all other usb devices

updated itunes and OS

always kept getting the mysterious "unknown error 56" msg searched all over for what that could mean with no luck. the process always seems to stop at the same place, and the second i unplug the phone, it jumps right back into recovery mode with the red itunes logo. if i were in a place that had a genious bar i would've gone there.

i need help fixing this problem please also i'd like to report this error to apple, really wanna do my part to help by reporting at the very least, so also if someone could tell me how to go about doing that, this is just sooo frustrating

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, i was in the middle of updating my phone and during the update my internet connection had decided it wanted to disconnect from everything and caused my phone to go into recovery mode. i plugged it into my computer and every time i tried to update through the computer it would not allow it to update. i then try the restore option and it will not allow it to restore. i was updating it to the most current iOS 8.3.0 i believe i didnt really see the numbers to be honest. is there anything i can try to do or a program that i may be able to download to solve my issue? thank you in advance to anyone who may help solve my dilemma or help steer me in the right direction

i hope so. but as what i've read on the forums, it seems like the only option is to go to Apple Store and swap it out.

I had the same problem. When i tried to update 8.1.3, i couldn't switch it on again.

I'm sorry but only way is changing the iPhone. When i take it to apple store, they said it is a hardware problem, and give me new one.

so don't waste any time go to nearest apple store.

Had the same issue, the way I was able to work around this issue was to remove the sim card from the phone, do the update/restore then put it back in, worked like a charm, lots of wasted time with apple support and waiting hours for the genius bar. Hope that helps someone, drove me crazy

phone is running again *praise it***

    * had to remove sim card and keep hitting the power button until the screen stayed black (a good 5 mins of your time)

    * put sim card back in and plug in ubs cord into phone and into computer

    * hold home button down until you see itunes pop up on your screen( a good 5 mins of your time)  took several tries

         * note you will have to repeat the process several times before phone will reach this part

    * after itunes pop up follow direction for restore

    * should come back up after that (another 5 or 10 minutes of your time)

    * then it time to fight back into your phone due to access is now blocked to your phone (yep that right another battle due to passcode is disabled)

    * if you have find my phone activated go to icloud (click on iphone and delete it) then restore phone again (another 5 minutes of your time)

    * phone will updated everything back on phone and change your passcode

My "still in the wrapper" iphone 6 activation at the Verizon Wireless Store worked ok.  They told me to go home and update the IOS, but when I did the same issue happened with Error 56.  Apple Support told me it was a "new" error and they were working on it.  "We'll get back to you within 48 hours...

THEN, I took it to the Apple Store and with 10 minutes they hand me a NEW phone.  So, I ask them to update it for me in the store (no dummy here) and guess what?  HE GETS ERROR 56!  He admitted they were seeing this more and more lately.  HE was able to restore back to original IOS and tole me NOT to update until the patch came in,
