On shutdown, a popup window always appears asking me "if i want to abort installation".

Hello,

I am running a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro Unibody with 4GB Ram, 2.53 Ghz Core Duo 2 and a 250GB Hard Drive. I use Mac OS X 10.9.5.

These is a popup window which appears every time i shutdown my mac. It asks if i want to continue installation. If i abort it shutdown. If i push continue, the mac crashes and completely powers off in an instant.

I'm pretty certain its not anything to do with software I have installed.

Is there a way of finding out which processes are pending for a shutdown to activate (I.e. the popup window which is asking me if i wish to continue installation,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Hi Linc,

I'm just trying to understand what your instructions are for - is the end result to post the diagnostic report here?

Attached below are screen shots for the pop-up I think is the same as what johnmcgrath82 is experiencing. Tonight it appeared without shutting down first. Reluctantly I selected 'Yes' and got the message as per the second image...

I'm not game to press abort again, although, have previously on shut-down and it just seemed to make it shut-down...

Hoping to get to the bottom of it - this and one other thread on here is all I can find... User uploaded file

I was able to find a solution through another thread. I was alerted to look for an app called 'Reset Search' on my launchpad, then to contact Apple Support if there was. There was an app there with that name, so I contacted Apple Support online and they were really helpful - walked me through all the folders that I needed to check and remove files with the name genieo. Seems to be fixed now. Happy days 🙂

I had the same problem when I tried to install an app from some website. As a result, a bunch of Genieo files nested in my iMac and blocked me from opening Safari. Fortunately, I also used Firefox, and with that I found how to get rid of them. However, 2 weeks later, every time I was shouting down I saw that "Installation in progress" box. Following this link from apple support, Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support, I was able to get rid of many more Genieo and Trovi files that were hidden in other folders I missed in the first cleaning. Follow the step-by-step instructions, and I hope it'll fix your problem as they fixed mine.
