App to transfer photos from iPhone to computer?

Well, I now have an iPhone. And I bought a book to figure out how to use it. The book is better than nothing, but it leaves out a lot of the connections.

I have discovered that an iPhone is not a bad copy camera for shooting artwork that one wants to document or digitize (my own artwork, no copyright issues there), but apart from emailing the shot, or the first shot of a photo burst, to myself I don't see any easily accessible way of transfering a photo to my computer.

The iPhone does not mount as a disk when it's connected, so I have to jump through hoops. The first time I hitched it up with the USB cord a window popped up which at least let me move them all to the trash (although it didn't delete them), where I was able to pull them out and put them in a folder. But the 2nd time that window was nowhere in sight and there was no info in the book about invoking it. Nor can I see anything whatsoever about transfering *images* in iTunes, which is what the phone appears to link to, nor in iPhoto where I would expect it. (And I don't want the images in iPhoto, I want them in a folder where I can get at them from Photoshop.)

Every digital camera in the business ships with a transfer utility so you can get the images onto a computer. Where is the one for iPhone? Is there a transfer utility in the App Store? What is it called, and where do I find it?

Also, you can have Image Capture automatically open when you connect the phone or any camera. To do that you need to open iPhoto on your Mac (yes, the setting is in iPhoto and that is a bit strange). In iPhoto open Preferences on the iPhoto menu and on the General tab of Preferences set "Connecting camera opens:" to Image Capture.

Why do I have to buy iPhoto to get to a setting so that I don't have to use iPhoto?!?! Not very Apple-like.

If the device is attached and highlighted in Image Capture, the setting is in the bottom left corner.

I am probably misinterpreting your reply, but just in case -- note that iTunes will not transfer photos from the iPhone to a computer. It can be used to transfer photos in the other direction, but not in the direction you originally inquired about.
