Printer connected through USB not printing???

I just recently bought a brand new macbook pro 15" with retina, but when I try to print through my HP Deskjet F4280 connected through a USB, it won't print anything. My computer recognizes the printer and I think they're connected, but when I click print, the printer icon shows up for a split second on the dock and then disappears. Nothing prints, and if I check the print queue, there's no current jobs. If I go in the printer and scanners tab in system preferences, the printer says it's idle. I'm trying to print things for school, and it's really getting frustrating, so any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

And my OS X software is fully updated to version 10.9.5 by the way
