Q: Upgrading Mail App in Tiger

I've recently switched to Verizon Internet, and would like to use it with Mail because I can send a lot of pictures at once in that program.  However Verizon tech support says they support Mail v. 4 and 5, while I only have v. 2 with my OS 10.4.11 on this PPC G4 MDD.  I see that apparently versions 3 and later for Mail are adaptable with later OS versions - Leopard and beyond.

Is there any way I can have Mail with my current ISP and OS without upgrading to 10.5 or 6? (And I probably can't go beyond OS 10.5 on this computer.)

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Mail is tied to the OS version, v2.1.3 is the highest 10.4.11 can do, v3.6 is the highest 10.5.8 can do.

Are you sure you can't setup v2 for Verizon?

Other mail app options would be older versions of ThunderBird, or SeaMonkey Browser that includes a mail app also.

    Is Verizon POP or IMAP?

    Many thanks, as always, BD,

Verizon is POP, they said, and they claim to support versions 4 and up.  Makes you wonder why this is considered 'progress', but I assume it requires software modifying for the earlier operating systems that costs companies extra time and money.  As it is, Time Warner accepted Mail v. 2.1.3, but we switched from them as their monthly fees went up.

Does Sea Monkey and/or Thunderbird offer the multiple-pictures-in-body-of-text option that Mail does?  With AOL, it's tedious to insert pictures, though a workaround I've tried is to prepare the photos as a PDF, since I have Acrobat Pro, and send that as an attachment.

You know those email things that friends circulate, with a dozen photos or so all in a vertical row?  That's what I'd like to do, and it seems like Mail could do it.

Thanks, sorry for long post here...

I'd be surprised if the 10.5.8 directions didn't work for 10.4.11...

Looks Like TBird does what you want also, just dragged & dropped 2 pics from the Finder to it's Compose window...

Thanks,BD,  looks like Tbird may be the solution for now.

    Case solved!

...Although....I think I tried Thunderbird many years ago, and found I had some difficulties with it...don't remember what, exactly.  Let's hope latest v. is more user-friendly, or that this user has gained considerably more experience in the mean time.

BD, Actually, since you asked, the Verizon tech guy had a terrible time trying configure Mac Mail to send, although he finally got it to receive.  I think he used every possible combination of user names and incoming/outgoing server entries.  This took an unbelievable 2½ hours, and he took over the screen.  He said the problem was also with the Verizon server, but said none of their Windows customers had problems...touché.

So he finally tried configuring Tbird, and got it to work.  Now I can send a bunch of photos - that's what I wanted it for.  Tbird's interface is a little buggy to my taste - or needs more care - as double clicking 'new message' gets you two message blanks.  Also, there's some difficulty with the folders and how they tend to nest and get complicated.  I will look for a tutorial, or take time to study more carefully.  Remember, I was a total novice back in 1990's when first tried this.

    best,

    Keith
