Q: what if my iPhone doesn't connect to my mac for keynote?

I was interested in using my iPhone as a remote for my presentation on my Macbook Pro. I've done this several times to connect my iPhone to the mac and it always pops out and says, 'Steven's iPhone is not available!'. I have enabled Remote on Keynote on the Mac and I have enabled Presentation Remotes on my iPhone. I don't seem to know what the problem is here.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), iphone 5s (iOS 8)

Is both the Mac and iPhone successfully connected to the same wifi network and new connections are not being blocked?. If its a home network this should be straight forward, if its a business network it most certainly will not work with out the system administrator allowing you to connect.
