Q: Recurring error: A graphics problem has been detected.

All of a sudden I'm now getting:

 

A graphics problem has been detected. Click "Report" to submit report...

[Ignore]  [Report]

 

And if I click any of the choices it comes right back pretty soon.

(It's less annoying just leaving the error message there.)

 

This is on a MBP 15" Retina late 2013 running latest Yosemite OS X 10.10.

This model switches graphics card/GPU when running on battery.

 

I've tried both safe booting and ran disk check and permissions check from Recovery.

 

It all started when the display server/loginwindow or something froze. I could move the mouse pointer around, but nothing registered with clicking mouse/touchpad or keyboard.

 

It happened after/when I plugged in an external screen with the mini-dp/thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter.

(Which have never been a problem before ...)

 

Any hints as to what may be the problem? Hardware or software?

(I'm aware that Yosemite is still beta, but I assume it's still OK to ask. Couldn't find the dedicated error reporting tool anymore.)

    @changepace, late 2012 mac mini (2.3GHz i7) here. Same set up, same issue when switching HDMI sources. Super frustrating!

    After turning off graphics switching on my 15" late 2013 MPBr, I stopped getting the 'graphics problem detected' error.  However, when using premiere pro I started getting pixel storms that have been mentioned on other threads and then video would stop displaying and I would have to restart.  I opened disk utility and repaired disk permissions (I did not restart in safe mode).  I, like andrewsh, had a number of permissions that needed to be repaired.  Yosemite has been running without issues since.

    I have this issue on 2 computers:

    • MacPro (Late 2013)
    • Mac Mini (Mid 2011)

     

    My Mini's Apple Care is over so I thought the graphic card had died. Almost sold the Mini for pieces. Guess I'll hold on to it to wait for a fix.

    No issues on Mavericks, but since upgrading to Yosemite had this error message and Mac freezes within 5 minutes of use (hooked up to HDMI TV).

    Totally fresh Yosemite install too.

     

    Message appeared for the first time on Mac Pro today too :/

    Not sure why, the Mac Pro had been in screen saver mode for a couple of hours.

     

    I hope there's a fix in the works!

     

    PS: The energy saver fix mentioned previously would apply to laptops only, wouldn't it?

    rMBP 15", late 2013 - I mentioned in this thread before that this issue arose next day after my upgrading to Yosemite. I have done a clean install now after the error, it looked like it helped but no, here we go again. I repaired the permissions, verified the disk. Removed the error logs. Switched off dynamic switching.

     

    I really hope Apple fixes this soon.

    So we've been moaning about this since about an hour after Yosemite was launched (and like others, I can confirm that running disk utility doesn't solve it). It is very obviously a software bug in Yosemite which isn't handling GPU switching, and WE all know that. But AFAIK Apple themselves aren't reading this thread. Is there an actual open BUG REPORT for Apple? Can we vote on it to promote it? How? If there isn't - can someone indicate how we can make one, because this is getting beyond a farce now.

    I've been reporting each time the error popped up but I am not sure it is doing something.

    Would opening a ticket with AppleCare help anything? Perhaps they can escalate the issue if enough of us are experiencing it

    Same problem here, Macbook Pro 15" retina late 2013 upgraded to Yosemite week after it came out. Occasionally the whole computer freezes, mouse still moves, i can drag around windows usually for a while, clicking doesn't work, fan speeding up, keyboard not working till it freezes up completely, only way out forced shut off.

     

    Will make an appointment with Apple Store and point them to this thread.

    I have been running into this problem on my work system when running cucumber test scripts with firefox configured as the browser.  I have not seen this problem when running the tests configured with chrome.  "automatic graphics switching" is not an option when I view Energy Saver.

    Im having the same issues with Yosemite.. late mac book pro retina 2014. mine happened when inserting my cameras memory card via a usb card reader when running lightroom.

     

    computer froze, mouse still moved. hard reset myself with the error message we are all talking about after....

     

    yosemite is buggy as ****

     

    Can we be sure its not a hardware bug?

    I am seeing this on a 15" MacBookMid 2012,  Retina Display (NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M).  Originally it was a system freeze in PhotoShop Elements 12, where only thing that moved was the pointer.  Power off/on, got the "Graphics problem detected" error message.  Now it happens a lot just using Safari.  I reported this to AppleCare last week.  Apple Support said they had no record of this problem and couldn't find any log of graphic crashes on my system.  They offered no solution other than to call them back the next time it happens, though if the system is hung how that  would help is beyond me.  So far has happened 3 times today and is really getting annoying.  So can everyone please report this so Apple will do something about it.

    I am having the same problem on a late 2013 15 Macbook Retina. The system is freezing when I use Keynote, only in this week I was forced to restart the system probably four times. The same thing happened with a co-worker and the problem was getting worse and at some point the screen turned black for good. Going to try Apple support this week!

    This happened to me exactly with my mid 2011 Macbook Pro. I took the computer to a local Apple Store, and certainly the geniuses had heard of this widespread problem. Forty minutes later, I emerged with a brand new $3200 Macbook Pro, mid-2014 for free. The genius said another graphics card would absolutely NOT fix the graphics issue, so I was entitled to an operational  new computer. It seems from reading everyone's complaints that the issues involved are just like mine. I was very lucky that my AppleCare contract was still in effect by three weeks. Nevertheless, Apple has a real problem with their graphics cards, and each individual has a right to get the problem fixed to his satisfaction. Good luck all.

    Just happened again to me last night, was using my computer, then all of the sudden everything froze, including my mouse. I could still see the computer running (network traffic in little snitch), but the only thing that resolved it was forcing shutdown and rebooting.
