Oct 14, 2014 11:21 AM in response to SeamasProinsiasby keg55,Check here for your brand/model printer to see if it is supported by Apple's software. Otherwise, you would need to go to the printer's manufacturer's site for OS X drivers.

Oct 14, 2014 1:04 PM in response to keg55by SeamasProinsias,Thanks for the quick reply.
Sorry for less than complete question asked.
Understand your reply, but I did speak with both Apple and HP - I have an HP 6500 709e all-in-one. Both Apple and HP seemed to make clear that scanning as I did with 10.8.6 is out of the question and only work arounds are possible, hookie at best, can be done. For example, now I cannot assemble a multi-page PDF document from the scanner and cannot place a sheet on the glass/hit scan and get a copy and then be asked if have another page to scan (this for multi page doc assembly). I Go to system prefs/open printers & scanners' select the 6500 and then scan but one page at a time and no assembly possible.
What I am hoping to do is find a short list of new printers/scanners that are totally compatible with 10.9.5 that are available off the shelf. Was in Costco and reading the specs on a box, believe it was an HP, warned that some features would/might not be available on 10.9. Are we going backwards with Mavericks?

Oct 14, 2014 2:02 PM in response to SeamasProinsiasby John Galt,★HelpfulScanning is easily accomplished with Preview. There are options to create a multi-page document, or separate documents from each scan. HP's OS X support has always been abysmal and their scanning software is hopeless.
After having too many problems like yours I gave up on HP. Recently, I have been using Brother's line of printers and multifunction devices without any trouble at all. Unlike HP Brother hasn't tried to reinvent the wheel. Don't try to initiate a scan using the printer's front panel. Use Preview - it's well designed for the task.

Thank you very much. I think you've sent me on a shopping trip - web and/or brick&Mortar. As you can guess, my discussions with both Apple and HP were frustrating to say the least.

Does the Officejet 6500 E709e not have a sheet feeder aka. automatic document feeder on the top? If so putting several sheets in that and telling it to scan should result in a single document being generated.
It is easy in Preview to insert page(s) from one PDF in to another to make a new PDF containing all the pages. Obviously this requires some additional work and the automatic document feeder should remove the need to do that.
Despite the confusing way the printer capability table is listed on the Apple site, I get the impression that Apple support Print, Scan and Fax capabilities on the Officejet 6500 E709e.
You could also look at VueScan which is a third-party scanning application and generally regarded as superior to both Apple and HP software. It does support the Officejet 6500 E709 family, see http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_officejet_e709a.html

Oct 15, 2014 5:53 AM in response to SeamasProinsiasby John Galt,I wouldn't wish a discussion with HP on anyone. Apple won't help since they exited the printer business ages ago, probably after realizing competition with that industry's bottom-feeders isn't worth their effort.
Nearly all "all-in-one" or multifunction devices will work with a Mac, but I recommend purchasing one from a company that visibly supports OS X. Brother, Canon, and Epson are all good choices. Others are simply not worth considering. That should narrow your research.
Wireless all-in-one devices are convenient and cost about the same as USB-only ones. Consider AirPrint compatibility for future needs.

Oct 15, 2014 6:22 AM in response to John Galtby Csound1,★HelpfulI will cast a vote for Brother, I just bought a cheap (£50) all in one (no fax, that model is about £70) from a local store. It installed easily with clear direction as to what was going on, connected it to the network and it was available to use in about 1 minute.

Photos for MacTake a look at VueScan. It's compatible with the 709a and might work with the e model. You can download the demo version and give it a try. If it works it might be less expensive that a new multi purpose scanner. Or not.

I think you may have hit on it. Downloaded the sample and on the first runs it seem to work well. Need to run a few more samples to test, but so far very good and the final price is an easy buy.
Thanks,
