Q: rMBP goes to sleep instead of power nap

Hello,

when I close the lid of my 2012 rMPB it goes to sleep instead of going to power nap mode.

System logs says:

14.10.14 22:05:47,000 kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5

(5 = shutdown (user initiated thru system, ie, shutdown from apple menu or shell))

I have power nap activated for battery and cord, did the SMC reset and battery is charged 100 %.

OS is Mavericks with all updates.

Any idea why I'm having this problem?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Describe the reason for concluding Power Nap isn't working. Previous Sleep Cause: 5 is normal system sleep initiated for a number of reasons.

(5 = shutdown (user initiated thru system, ie, shutdown from apple menu or shell))

I do not understand the relevance of that comment. Sleep and shutdown are not the same.

If you are convinced it is not working as it should determine if your Mac requires a firmware update:

    Hello John,

    thank you for your answer.

When I close the lid for more than 10 seconds, WiFi connection is gone when opening the lid again. Therefore I conclude that the system is not in power nap mode. (Many times I have to deactivate and reactivate WiFi for making it work again.)

My system has all updates available installed, and I can also see the power nap option (activated) in the energy settings.

Any further hints for making it work are highly appreciated, thank you!

    Regards

    Geronimo

That annoying problem has come and gone with various Mac models and OS X updates. There does not appear to be one sole cause, and the particular router or wireless access point you're using may bear upon the problem also. I have no reason to believe it's related to Power Nap though, since it has been known to affect Macs than can't use Power Nap.

On your Mac, do the following. It may not fix the problem but it will eliminate other uncertainties.

Go to System Preferences > Network. Select Wi-Fi or AirPort from the left column. Click the Advanced... button.

Under the Preferred Networks list, select every Wi-Fi network that appears, including the one(s) you want to use, and delete every one using the "–" (minus) button. Select the box "Remember networks this computer has joined" if it is not already selected.

    OK then Apply.

Select your wireless network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu and provide your wireless network password. Be sure the network you select is yours and not someone else's.

An SMC reset may also be justified. Try that also.

If you don't get anywhere contact AppleCare. This particular problem seems to elicit their interest more than others. They may have you download a program to collect certain information that may eventually point toward a resolution.

    Hello John,

thank you, but I did the SMC reset and the WiFi settings already months ago without the problem getting better.

As I see it the log says "sleep mode", so my MBP is going to sleep instead of staying in power nap. Isn't this the root cause? (Instead of the WiFi problem..)

Ok, thanks, I will try Apple Care..

When you close the lid on a portable Mac, it enters sleep mode, not Power Nap. The sleep mode you're describing is normal.

Some time after it enters sleep mode, Power Nap will wake it periodically to do its tasks, upon the completion of which it re-enters sleep mode. The cycle repeats until its battery reaches a certain charge state or you wake it. If you want to examine wake events including Power Nap, you have to filter system logs for some other parameter such as "wake".

I'm not 100% certain but I believe an NVRAM reset will reset sleep mode parameters if they have been modified for whatever reason. It may also be justified if you have reason to suspect Power Nap is not working as you think it should. I doubt it's related to the Wi-Fi reconnection problem.

Thank you, now I understand power nap mode. I could see in the logs that my machine woke up every hour over night. (Power nap)

I'll try to fix my network problem now.
