healthkit data lost after reset

I needed to reset my iPhone due to an unrelated issue. Before doing so I made a full backup via iTunes. After the reset I restored the backup. Everything restored fine except for my historical Healthkit data. Does anyone know if backups are supposed to preserve Healthkit data? If not, is there any other way to backup and restore it?

I've had the same problem. All of my HealthKit data, which I've been tracking since I got my iPhone 6 on launch day, simply disappeared. If there is any way to restore from a backup, I haven't found it. It's crazy that Apple doesn't backup this data to iCloud or include it in the iPhone backups. That's a serious and obvious design flaw.

I believe the data is included in encrypted back ups. You can also use some of the many third party apps that Health syncs to to store your data. I've found that it's helpful to think of Health not as a standalone tracking app (it's not, in my opinion very good at being that) but as a conduit to share data (that used to be locked into individual apps) with lots of other apps.
