Hi there,
I am new to Final Cut Pro X and I am struggling to import my media onto my Macbook I have many folders of XML files on a windows Harddrive taken from the Macs at my Uni. Some of the footage is working however some of it isn't being recognised as XML files - does anybody know a solution?

First, the files should be named with the proper extension, e.g. filename.fcpxml
Second, each version of FCP X has come with updated XML formats. Probably a newer version of FCP X can open XML from an older one (probably!), but certainly not the other way around.
Third: are you sure the files are really plain text files with XML content?
Open one of them in a plain text editor like Smultron or TextWrangler, and look at the contents. They should be readable and start with something like the following lines. Note the version number - here "1.4" is the version of xml in FCP X 10.1.3. Older versions of FCP X had older versions of XML, of course.

I used text wrangler to read the file and what I got was this:

SSounds like these are the XMLs that define the specifucations and metadata for your clips, but not the media itself. Just a guess.
Okay, if that is the case how would I solve the issue?
WWhat are you trying to do? if these aren't FCP XMLs you can't import them. If these are metadata files for clips you don't have there is no point in importing them even if you could. If these where taken out of a camera card structure you need the whole structure to be able to do anything with the media. XMLs are just information files.
I imported all of the contents etc needed for the FCP XML file but it isn't recognising them - it recognises others just that these - so I guess I will try and move them again
Hello again - I realised my mistake - I have the MXF files with my VLC files. Its my MXF files that aren't working - some of them import fine however the majority of them I am having problems with. I have the contents folders and clip folders - and the XMF files play in VLC player - however this message appears when I try to import them
'None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again.'
