What do you mean with “...so I can get texts on my android phone?”. You can send text messages to any phone, having or not iMessage enabled. To turn it off go to Settings » Messages.
I traded in my iphone 4S without canceling imessage first. Now I cannot receive text messages on my new Android phone from anyone that uses an iphone. I've tried the steps that Samsung has posted online on how to do it, e.g. changing my Apple ID and deleting my old iphone from my profile but I still cannot receive text messages from anyone with an iphone. I CAN however, send text messages to people with iphones, just can't receive them back.
iMessage lets you send messages back and forth with anyone on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or a Mac running Mountain Lion or later.
