Is there a manual way to keep an iMac running quickly and efficiently? I recently started getting pop-ups that would not go away unless I closed the program I was using. How do I keep this from happening?

I have an iMac and recently started getting pop-ups that would not go away unless I closed the program I was using. It seemed to have started right after I downloaded Firefox to my computer. I was told by iYogi that I need to remove MacKeeper so I did. It seems to be running quicker and smoother now, but they also told me I have a lot of junk on the computer which could be slowing it down. Is there a manual way or a simple app that can be used to keep a Mac running smoothly and efficiently?

No manual that I am aware of however to keep your computer running well there are some basic guidelines to follow.

First do not treat it like a Microsoft based PC, in other words just use it and DO NOT download any antivirus, performance enhancing, or types of maintenance utilities such as CleanMyMac, MacKeeper, etc.. These will hurt the performance of your machine, in some cases will harm OS X and finally are 100% unnecessary.

The best thing you can do to keep your Mac running well is to keep it up-to-date by running Software Update regularly and installing all the recommended updates.

Next is to use a little common sense, do not download from illegal sites such as Torrent sites, do not fall for scams that come in the form of unsolicited emails that tell you that you have to download or buy something. If you get an unsolicited phone call telling you your computer has a problem then hang up. Ignore pop-up adds. You can install a pop-up blocker, in Safari I recommend using Ad-Blocker which can be located in the Safari-Preferences-Extensions-Add Extensions. In other browsers they may have similar extensions so become familiar with your browser and look.
