Update failing at unpacking "essentials.pkg"

Last week I updated my mid 2010 Macbook Pro to the OS X 10.10 beta without any problem. Today i tried to updat my mid 2011 27" iMac to 10.10 and it gave the error: unable to unpack essentials.pkg, restart and try again. No mather how many times I try it it doesn't work. This was the same when I tried to install the beta on the iMac a few days ago. it took me 24 hours to restore it back to its state, because using time machine restore doesn't directly from this point doesn't work ether.

At first I thought it might be because I tried to install it to an external thunderbolt ssd, but after trying to install it to the internal hard drive it just "downloaded the extra components" and when it should be rebooting it just went back to the default OS X recovery screen.

I also tried making an external installer drive but after holding option key and selecting the usb with the installer on it, it loads and after a while it shows the big no data found logo.

Anyone got any ideas or even the solution?

are there more people with this problem?

let me know,

thanks in advanced!

After being on the phone with Applecare for almost an hour we finally solved the problem.

Turns out that Yosemite doens't like all the 3rd party memory, in my Macbook Pro I had a kit "Mac Ram" and in the iMac there was a set of normal corsair memory.

After taking out the 16GB 3rd Party and putting back the original memory the problem was solved.

Even better was that after the installation I put back the 3rd party memory and it worked like a charm.

So for everyone with the same problem, and for those who have 3rd party memory, try the original.

Hope this helps!

Not to be an ***, but just to be sure;

You're a 100% sure there is not 3rd party memory installed?

The guy from AppleCare told me a story about a lady who bought an iMac from iCenter (Authorized Apple Reseller in Holland) who had a Ram doubling promotion.

They would double your ram if you bought an iMac at their store. Came out they where using 3rd party ram without telling the customer, which let to any problems not being covered by AppleCare.

(Applecare did solved the problem but it took a long time).

Other suggestions he gave me:
- Try to download the installer again, me be a bad download (I think most of us have already tried this).

- Try downloading on another network (if possible, e.g. an apple store, family or friends).

Just quick question, do you have the last 5 lines of your error log at hand? Just wondering if it's the exact same problem or a slightly different one?

I spoke too soon. I was able to install Yosemite once I switched back to the original Apple memory, but I get constant kernel panics when I reinstall my memory from Crucial. It boots up fine, then crashes within 3-5 minutes with this error:

I shows the current process being Safari, is it only when using Safari it crashes?

In both my Macs I use Corsair memory. The Macbook Pro has MAC Memory from Corsair and the iMac has the laptop one. Perhaps that Crucial memory just causes the real big problems, but the only way to find out is to replace it, which is a expensive thing to "just try out".

Have you contacted Applecare about the problem already?
