how and what can I remove from my startup disk to make room for the new update?

It says that I don't have enough space to install the new update and that I need to remove somethings from the start up disk. How do I see what is on the start up disk and what types of things could I remove?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

You need to remove documents, pictures, movies, etc., that you no longer need on your startup drive. If you want to keep them, move them to an external drive.

Additionally, you need to maintain a minimum of 10 - 15 GB of empty space on your hard drive at all times in order for the OS to function properly.
