phone call from Yosemite does not work

This worked for me - thanks a ton, Katsuyuki. It appears some app altered some network optimization settings. Here's an article explaining a bit more about how all this works, and even though it's relevant to 10.6 I don't think much has changed since:

Guys, maybe this pic will help some of you. If you have followed all the steps in this thread, and you can receive but not make calls from your mac/contacts because the phone icon is grayed out, just drag your cursor to the actual phone #, instead of trying the phone icon between facetime and audio. I find for me, that when I hover on the actual #, a blue phone icon appears, then it will work.

However, if the person has imessage and are on wifi, the phone icon will light up as you would expect below. Hope that helps at least 1 of you!

I solved the issue everyone!!! or rather shall i say the apple genius bar did lol. a clean install of the new software yosemite would fix ALL of your problems, not only this one. just make sure to back up your files before doing so. enjoy everyone!!

I was at home working on my Mom's 2008 iMac. I upgraded to Yosemite and tried out iPhone calling, and it worked like a charm, once I "allowed incoming connections" to a process called "identityservicesd", when prompted by FaceTime (or Firewall?). I actually found this item in System/Library/Private Frameworks/IDS.Framework/identityservicesd.

I am not offered this opportunity on my 2011 iMac. But I know that once I allowed connections to this process, the iPhone calling in Yosemite on my Mom's iMac worked fine.

Anybody know what this means and how it could help those of us with later-edition Macs?

I did a clean install and still have issues as I have noted above, so it's not a silver bullet...unfortunately

LOL, go to system preferences, security and privacy, firewall. If you have "Block all incoming connections" checked under Firewall Options it will never work. simply uncheck that box and presto, it's working.

Make sure that you go to your firewall OPTIONS and uncheck...Block all!! If you don't do this, calls will never work!!

Calling works like a champ for me.

This fixed my issue of being unable to make outgoing iPhone 6 calls from my MacBook Air (2013)/Yosemite. I was receiving incoming iPhone calls on my MBA just fine, just couldn't make outgoing calls from Contacts on MBA. Now resolved. Thank you!!!

"This" in my previous post being unchecking "block all incoming connections" in firewall, and then checking "automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections". (Also enabled stealth mode for protection, now that "block all incoming connections" is unchecked.) And now, outgoing iPhone 6 calls from MacBook Air/Yosemite work.

I had everything correct in the answer that"worked" but it still didn't work until I tried this. Once I unplugged the ethernet, it works!. I had the wireless as the top or primary connection but apparently the ETHERNET HAS TO BE UNPLUGGED.

I also removed the ethernet cable and now "call failed" seems to be gone.

OMG!!! Four hours later, I just ran Broadband Tuner for verizon fios and now it works. unbelievable. i hate apple so much lately. what an awful awful system.

although handoff only works from phone to mac and not mac to phone. idiots!

Same thing for me. It was the time setting of my my book pro that was not the same. iphone and macbook was on different timezones. I reboot the mac and iphone and IT FINALLY WORKS. Thanks a lot oliver
