Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

I have a 15 inch late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro. I'm trying to pair it with an iPhone 6 plus with ios 8.1 and I am having the same issues. ****** off!!!!!!!!!

And you obviously haven't read any of the thread you posted to. You cannot pair any iPhone with any computer. It isn't supported. It never has been supported. And iOS 8 and Yosemite hasn't changed that. It also isn't necessary to pair to use any of the continuity features.

Hello!

So it is totally normal, that If I paired the Mac with iPhone, and press to connec, it said "MacBook pro is not supported" ?

If it's normal, then everything fine.

Thanks

Yes, that's normal. There is no need to pair, as continuity features use a transient mode of BlueTooth 4 that does not require that the devices be paired.

Thanks Lawrence Finch,

I did end up getting some of the features working intermittently, that is I have made a call but still cannot receive them through my Mac. It does seem like it is improving though. SMS works and that's about it for now. I deleted my iCloud account and then re-added them to get this progress. Thanks for the time you have taken to try to help us all. I just think Apple has made it clear as mud. They are starting to feel a little like Microsoft when they seemed to own the world. I guess there really isn't anything better out there just yet, or maybe it's all just a first world problem and we should all just be grateful.

RESOLVED:

Mid-2012 MacBook Pro and iPhone 6 Continuity and Hand off

I was able to get continuity and instant hotspot working after hours of trying every forum post on the internet. What finally worked for me was:

Make sure you are logged into Facetime on your iPhone as the same ID as your Apple ID. Somehow I didnt have this configured correctly, and soon as I did, continuity and instant hotspot appeared on my macbook pro.

I spent about 2 hours on the phone today w/senior apple support specialists. All hardware is compatible withe these features.

it works that the MBA will 'send' stuff to the iPhone, but not the other way. phone calls going either direction don't work.

I even did a clean install of iOS 8.1 on the iPhone 6+, to no better results.

I really wanted the handoff, not the continuity, since most of my time my phone is next to my laptop anyway, continuity really didn't give me much. But being able to call from my mac using my iPhone was the real draw.

I guess I'll wait for an update, or perhaps do a clean install of Yosemite, but I'm really not that desperate for the features.

Good luck to others out there - let me know if you get it fixed!

I'm really fed up with people who post messages like yours without bothering to read the messages in the thread they posted to, which have the answers. If you had bothered to read any you would know that you cannot pair 2 computing devices like an iPad and an iPhone, and that there is no need to pair them to use Continuity features. However, you DO have to set them up as described in the manual and in Knowledge Base articles that have been linked to a dozen or so times in the thread.
