Q: Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

Works! Thank you! It says Not Connected in the bluetooth panel on the 5s, however I can go to my contacts on my MacBook Air and click the handset (phone) icon and it dials and connects as advertised. This is good enough for now. Now if Yosemite boot was less ugly - maybe over time...

Possible fix or what worked for me.

Used a different USB cable and all of a sudden everybody is friends again. Don't get stuck on 'it can't be the cable' (like I did). The first cable I was using was original Apple product and it had just been working the day before (it would charge when connected but not recognize the device). Finally remembered to grab the other cable from my car (again original Apple product) and tried it without much hope. That fixed it for me, everything else fell in line. Hope this might work for some of you too.

    My original problem.

When signed in to iTunes on my MacBook Pro it wouldn't recognize my iPhone5S or my iPad Air. I think it started right after I updated to IOS 8 and I thought  that when Yosemite was available, the problem would go away. Lost days and hours searching and trying everything out there.

This solved the Handoff issue for me:

I did all of Apple's suggestions below, plus these two steps:

    (1) logged out of iCloud on my iPhone [choosing "delete whenever prompted] and then logged back in

    (2) Rebooted phone and computer

Below: (part of) Apple's "Get Help Using Continuity with iOS an OSX Yosemite"

    Check your settings

Check the following settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

    • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn on Wi-Fi if necessary.
    • Make sure your iOS devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network by going to Settings > Wi-Fi and comparing the name of the network each is on.
    • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth if necessary (I turned it on)
    • Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps and make sure Handoff is on.
    • Go to Settings > Phone. If you see Wi-Fi Calling, turn it off.

Check the following settings on your Mac:

    • Go to the Wi-Fi icon at the top of your screen and turn on Wi-Fi if necessary.
    • Make sure your Mac and iOS devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iOS device and compare the name of the network with the Wi-Fi network on your Mac.
    • Go to the Bluetooth icon at the top of your screen and turn on Bluetooth if necessary (I turned it on)
    • In System Preferences > General, select “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.” If you don't see this setting, your Mac may not support Handoff.
    • Open the FaceTime app, go to FaceTime > Preferences and turn on “iPhone Cellular Calls.”
    • Go to System Preferences, and sign out and then sign in again to your iCloud account.

WHAT "same issue"?  There have been several different issues mentioned in this thread, with trouble shooting steps posted for each of them.

I can't get the continuity or the handoff to work properly on my MBA 2012 (bluetooth NOT trying to pair, but both BT are on). Logged into same .mac account and have all the settings mentioned here. Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite  using iphone 6+.

I can see the audio links are active, but everytime it tries to use the phone for a call, it gives me a  "call failed. try again" notification.

I've signed out then in of icloud on both devices and re-logged in.

I guess I'll call apple support next.

    Same problem here...

MacBookPro mid-2012 with yosemite final, clean install.

iPhone 5S iOS 8.1 clean install.

I can't send anything to my Mac from my iPhone BUT I can send files to iPhone from my Mac.

I can pair the devices but the iPhone can't see the Mac, and when I press to connec to MacBook always "MacBook Pro is not supported".

    It's unbelievable...

    Hello!

So it is totally normal, that If I paired the Mac with iPhone, and press to connec, it said "MacBook pro is not supported" ?

If it's normal, then everything fine.

    Thanks

Instant hotspot worked for me after I connected to my hotspot using the old method, with a cable. After that, for instant hotspot to work, your iphone's cellular connection must be turned on. "Instant" gave me the impression that my mac would also turn on my phone's cellular connection and I spent a good hour figuring out that this isn't the case .

And you obviously haven't read any of the thread you posted to. You cannot pair any iPhone with any computer. It isn't supported. It never has been supported. And iOS 8 and Yosemite hasn't changed that. It also isn't necessary to pair to use any of the continuity features.
