Q: Yosemite killed my wifi

Upgraded to Yosemite this evening on my mid 2011 Mac mini and now I don't have wifi. The wifi menubar icon has an "x" on it and when I click on it, it says, "Wi-Fi: not configured." The only option is to Open Network Preferences.

When I open Network Prefs, there's no wifi option on the left, only ethernet, Thunderbolt, firewire and bluetooth. I try to add a wifi network via the "+" sign, but nothing gets added. My wifi network is working fine as my wife and kids' computers (on Mavericks) as well as all of our iOS devices connect to it fine as usual.

Luckily, my Mac mini is normally connected to the internet via ethernet cable, but I need to figure this wifi issue out.

When I go through whatever diagnostics, it sees my wifi network and allows me to enter my password, but then it won't connect. But, it only shows my wifi network via these diagnostics - not from the wifi dropdown on the menubar and not in Network Prefs.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

This is funny how stuffs work out in life. I bought a mac book air thinking that I would never have to deal with technical problems and yet here I am now experiencing worst wifi problems than ever on a PC. seriously Apple, Yosemite ***** and the way you are handling this issue is pathetic!

    11" mid-2011 Air,

I'm on the University College London campus WiFi Network (eduroam)

Up until the Yosemite upgrade, I had absolutely no problems with connections.

Now my Wifi Drops every 10 seconds.

I have tried every fix I can find on the net -disabling bluetooth, resetting the smc, creating a new location, switching ip6 to link local only

    deleting network preferences, etc, etc.....

    Please Apple -Fix this problem.

This "solution" in no way fixes the problem.

You probably have a different issue. I tried the following procedure to four (4) different laptops and work to all fo them.

Resetting the SMC on portables with built-in batteries: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. 3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. 4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. 5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

TheodoreT - Like most of the others that have posted here I have indeed tried resetting the SMC(and a great number of other things!) like almost everyone else here though it does not fix the problem although it may offer some short term improvement.

Yosemite is really the worst operating system ever.

I have tried all the wifi "fixes" from the forums and nothing works.

And they are really taking their time to fix this.

    Time to switch!

Mine has progressively gotten worse.  Wifi may stay connected 30 seconds before dropping again essentially making my MAC Mini useless.  I was actually better prior to the 10.10.1 update which was supposed to address the wifi issue.

    Very frustrating Apple!

This somehow solved the problem for me as it is running for a couple weeks now. There was just one difference in the approach, as I am using an administrating and a regular user account on my mac. Although I was able to run the terminal commands as admin it did not work until I physically switched to the admin account and tried these steps again.

Launch Terminal (you can get to it via the Spotlight icon at the top right. Copy and paste these lines below.

    Enter:

    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

(and hit return and enter your account password)

    Now enter:

    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

    (and hit return)

    Now check Safari.

My brother just had this problem on a Mac that has been upgraded and upgraded time and time again.

I saw this problem on my older Mac with the Yosemite betas. discoverd is the new name resolver process and it seems it's still buggy.

Currently Apple launched a new update which seems to contain a solution for the wifi incident, so I hope it will fix the problem for everybody here.

I have encountered the same problem.  Wish I had never updated to Yosemite.  Lesson learned.   Wait until releas xx.1 before upgrading.  May have to connect to router via ethernet but I did find that using my iPhone as a hotspot and connecting my MacBook via bluetooth connection is working.  I have a limited data plan so hope Apple will release the fix pronto.

you're amazing. The deletion of the SystemConfiguration folder enabled me to reconnect to the network. I'm downloading the 10.10.1 update now. Was the most ironic moment of my life, being on a public windows computer trying to find a fix for my macbook. Like I'd fallen through a worm-hole to a backwards universe or something. Please God let the Debian devs fix the problem with the magic trackpad so I can go back to Jessie and run mountain lion in a VM. #LinusEatsApplesForBreakfast

Like everyone else under the sun who upgraded to Yosemite, I also had the same issue.

The solution with the help of Apple Support was the following.

    1. Open FINDER
    2. In the GO TO folder on top click on OPTION and click on LIBRARY when it comes up.  It is hidden unless you click OPTION.
    3. Click on the PREFERENCES folder
    4. Inside the PREFERENCES folder delete files related to Bluetooth, such as your trackpad and mouse.

These are the files that I deleted.

    • com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist
    • com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist
    • According to Apple support I could have had a third somewhere but I didn't.  If it says "bluetooth" delete it.  (note: it is right under PREFERENCES. Not hidden in any other subfolder.

Instantly my speed when from 0.3 mb/s to 65mb/s.

    Good luck.

After many attempts to fix my wifi connectivity issue since Yosemite, I tried this

    http://fieldguide.gizmodo.com/the-worst-bugs-in-os-x-yosemite-and-how-to-fix-the m-1652690924

    and it worked!

Go to "this Reddit thread" link this Reddit thread

I then did only these steps

    Kext Utility is available here

    1. Open Kext Utility.
    2. Let it repair permissions, it will tell you when it's done

I didn't even reboot and all seems fine!  Only confusing bit was the message saying "Drag files onto window to process them" the program will run automatically and tell at the bottom of the window when it's complete

hope this works for others because I was getting sooooooooo frustrated!
