Q: Yosemite : Handoffs Problem

I used to use the Public Beta version of Yosemite and this was working fine.

But on installing the Official Version last night, the Handoffs continuity feature only works in one direction that is from iPhone 5 to iMac.

If I open safari or Mail on my iPhone, I can see the icon on the Dock of the iMac. But if i open the same apps on my iMac, i am unable to see the little icon on my iPhone and continue on my iPhone.

I have checked all the settings on both devices. I have also rebooted both devices.

On calling Apple they say they don't have much information on this as it is new to them.

If anyone has a solution, please do reply.

Thanks so much

Cyrus !

Mine was working one way (from mac to iPhone) but now it stopped working and it is not working at all. reseting both devices didn't work for me.

same issue here. iPhone to mac is working well, but mac to iPhone doesn't. It works seamlessly on the public beta of yosemite.

Works from IOS to MBA but never from MBA to IOS.....no fixes show any results.

Noticed that my MBA was Bluetooth paired in both IOS devices and that they could not be forgotten (option greyed out). After researching that issue, I just signed out of ICloud on my Ipad and then signed back in after which the pairing was gone and Handoff now working both ways.

Will try later with the IPhone but the moral seems to be that if an IOS device is BT paired with a Mac then Handoff will NOT work.

Hmmm...on the Iphone when did the ICloud signout/signin, it is still shpwing the MBA as Bluetooth connected but Hnadoff is working both ways so I guess it is just the process that fixed it.

So, now I have an IPad that shows the MBA not connected to Bluetooth and an IPhone that says it is connected, both working with Handoff....a bit weird

I'm not 100% sure what I did to fix this, but for the past couple days Handoff has been working seamlessly between my iPhone, iPad, and 2 Macs.

    From what I remember:

    • Made sure Bluetooth was enabled on all devices, and all on the same WiFi network.
    • I made sure on all 4 devices that AirDrop was set to "Everyone" and not "Contacts Only" (in Control Center for iOS; and on the Mac, open a Finder window, select AirDrop in the sidebar, then select Everyone)
    • I enabled iCloud Drive on all devices (not sure this was necessary, but doesn't hurt if you upgrade all your devices to Drive)
    • Then I rebooted all my Macs and iOS devices a couple times.

And haven't had any problems since.

I don't think WiFi, AirDrop, or ICloud Drive has anything to do with this as Handoff is working bidirectional for me with all three services turned off on my MBA. The only thing which seems to make a difference is being signed into the same ICloud account and perhaps there are some intermittent hiccups in whatever link ICloud provides. I realize one can never rule out weird stuff happening with toggling a whole bunch of switches but, as I said, Handoff can't really depend on them if it works with them off.

My take anyway and everything has been working beautifully since I signed in and out of ICloud on the two IOS devices.

Just been told by a friend that handoff needs airdrop on to work! I only had bluetooth on before! Turned on airdrop and It works fine now.

I am sorry but that is just wrong....I have Air Drop off on both IOS devices and Handoff is fully functional in both directions (Air Drop is always on for the Mac).

The only think you need is to be signed in on ICloud on the same account, bluetooth on, and from what I can see, having a device already bluetooth paired can be an issue.

Well the obvious thing to do is turn it on and off a few times to see if that actually was the issue.

my wife and I share an iMac. My 5s was behaving correctly but wife's wasn't. The last thing I tried on her phone before it worked was forgetting any devices in Settings>Bluetooth (tap the "i" for each device)

Arggghhhh...back to one way only, from IOS to MBA but not the other way.

I am beginning to wonder if this isn't a server issue on Apple's side. The company doesn't have exactly a great record in anything to do with sync and there is just too much wonkiness with people trying every kind of fix and then attributing success to whatever they did. Handoff does require being signed into ICloud so clearly something must be happening server-side.
