Time Machine not working with Yosemite

I recently upgraded (clean install) from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite. Before upgrading, I backed up my MacBook Pro via Time Machine on a network server (QNAP.) Yosemite is up and running now, however, I am unable to access folder history via Time Machine. Yosemite recognizes the historical backups, however, when I select a specific date in Time Machine, nothing happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

This problem does not seem to be affecting everyone, or even in the exact same way. Very very odd ... Still dozens of us, are experiencing problems using their time machine, ever since the Yosemite change, just in this thread. That includes me. Every OS change, seems to bring wt it new un foreseen problem. The last big problem facing users was WiFi, and there been many many more. Strangely I didn't have any WiFi issues. I know that it has nothing to do wt old stuff on my machine, because I did a clean install., using a empty USB drive. Very very strange ...

Hi James,

I just did it again. For me, it's not necessary to have the Home folder selected when entering Time Machine. After entering, I just have to select my "MacBook Pro" under Devices. I then select "Js2011MBP" (its name), and I have access to any and all folders including System, Library, Users, Incompatible Software, Applications. I selected Library, went back several days, waited for the thing to catch up (it's on Wi-Fi, not directly connected) and could select and restore any folder in the Library. Same for System, and all the others.

sorry 'bout that, temporary keyboard and mouse wifi problems ..

John, sometimes I am able to access the backups before November 11, when I installed Yosemite, by searching through the home folder. Not always though. I clean installed Yosemite on November 11. Still hunting through literally tens of thousands of files, using time machine, is kinda fruitless, when I can just as easily o it by selecting my backup drive. It kinda defeats the purpose of time machine. At least for now, it still is saving backups. Still what occurs in the next update, a fix, or complete Tim Machine inu

All information back to when I wiped the TM drive and started from scratch before installing Yosemite is present so TM has been recording changes.

I found clicking on my home folder first in the finder, then going into TM (even from the menu bar) and I can now access as expected.

This is not how it used to work, but at least it is working. In the past, a sub folder (for example in Data) could be selected and TM would work.

Prior to 10.10.1, accessing files could be hit and miss, working sometimes and then not at all. Leaving TM and then coming in again would let it work, at least for a while.

Exact !!

It works

As a old french Mac user ,I followed all the contributions regarding this topic

Yosemite and TM

since I could not restore folder or file ..

and now it's OK for me

the correct "route" is

on Finder select your Home folder (if the the file to be restored is in it)

enter TM

choose the "previous date " on the right bar ..it becomes "red"

select the file

select "restore" ..

THKS to all of you

However Apple Should fix that clearly in OS 10.10.2

Just prior to installing Yosemite, I did a full backup of my iMac 2009. I erased my iMac HD (had a drive error and thought this might help) and installed Yosemite, and restored my backup. My Time Capsule was just new and backups seemed to be fine until Dec. 12. I finally noticed on Dec 19 that there had been no automatic backups since then. I thought that maybe the drive was full and not erasing the old backups but Time Machine shows it has lots of space. I don't know what happened on Dec 12 that might have triggered the problem.

So, my problem is not the accessing of backup files (which I could do through the finder) but that no further backups have occurred because of the error "backup disk not available". I've reset my Time Capsule (powered off with reset) and somehow got to rename it and the backup volume, but still no access. I don't need to find files from the previous backups, I just want everything I've done since Dec 12 to be backed up. I'll just have to wait for an update and hope for a fix. Meanwhile, I won't be able to back up.

Same happened to me and after several hours of panic and Googling my butt off, I figured it out. Here's what worked for me:

1. Go into your Time Capsule settings via Airport Utility, open Network Mode and turn off all wireless in your Time Capsule only.

2. Turn off the wirless on your Mac.

3. Connect your TC to your computer via an ethernet cord.

4. Restart your computer.

NOTE: When it restarts, the info on the TC will be unavailable for a short time. Don't panic, it should show up after five minutes or so.

5. Go to your Finder and look for the TC listing. Open it and (hopefully) see the file marked 'Data".

6. Click that to open it. Look for the user you need to restore. Click the user file just as you would any external drive and look for the backup date you need.

7. Drag files from the TC to your desktop.

8. Open that file and it should have all your files on there. Just drag them to your desktop and give them time to copy from the TC to the desktop.

NOTE: The files copy much faster via a tethered connection so it won't take too long to copy what you need.

This is obviously a major glitch with Time Machine in Yosemite. I tried a lot of different ways to connect with my TC wirelessly but the connection was spotty at best and the TC never really gave me the option to restore my files.

BEST ADVICE: Don't relay on Time Machine to restore files on a clean install from Mavericks to Yosemite. Use Super Duper, it never fails.

I haven't gotten around to actually trying 'Restore' with the setup I have going at the moment, but I'll give it a try after I've copied everything I need.

I'd be interested to hear what other peoples experience were with trying this tact with the Time Machine backups. Good luck.
