Q: Time Machine not working with Yosemite

I recently upgraded (clean install) from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite.  Before upgrading, I backed up my MacBook Pro via Time Machine on a network server (QNAP.)  Yosemite is up and running now, however, I am unable to access folder history via Time Machine.  Yosemite recognizes the historical backups, however, when I select a specific date in Time Machine, nothing happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I have the same problem with Time Machine. The backups are there on my external disk but I can't access them in Time Machine itself.

In Time Machine all I see is the 'Today Now' folder and all the ones behind it are greyed out and not selectable as though the backups aren't there. Only the desktop and Macintosh HD folders are shown 'going back in time'. When I try to open any other folder the 'back in time' folders disappear and are greyed out again or the view switches back to 'Macintosh HD' and I just see the Macintosh HD folders going 'back in time' again. I tried restarting while holding cmd R to see if I could back up from my Time Machine and I can - the backups are there.

I have tried wiping my external drive and setting up Time Machine again, letting it do a whole backup again and still I have the same problem. I've tried turning Time Machine off, deleting the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file, adding my disk again but same problem. Now I'm giving up.

I suppose I can access my backups manually and I'm safe if I have to restore the entire system, but it is annoying that I can't restore files from the Time Machine interface and it's doubly annoying because I've been using Time Machine for years under Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion on my old Mac Mini.

I'm on a brand new Mac Mini running Yosemite 10.10.1 and this is not the only thing I'm finding broken.

ya sounds like my 5 -6 hours trying to get at my photos in time machine that has me very nervous especially after 3 hours with a senior Apple consultant who could not get things working and came up with reinstalling the crappy Yosemite as I didn't want to wipe my HD clean and reinstall Maverick due to the work I've done between the two operating systems would be lost. It's a nightmare trusting an Apple back up system that will not work within the Apple future operating systems,I so trusted Apple for a long time now it's starting to wain and there becoming more like PC,especially since there getting rid of Aperture and iPhoto too! It ***** to be a photographer using Apple these days,Steve Jobs would be turning in his grave if he ever heard that.

I tried to but like some many things Apple these days it won't  work and take my login no matter how many times I try,I don't think they want bugs reported anymore, there full up!

I just signed into the bug site without a problem....

I entered this bug and the other bug I have that mail designated as junk doesn't remain as junk when I get the next mail from the same sender.

BTW: I never knew about the BUG site... thanks for that!

Thanx GroveMan. I sure hope that the next Yosemite update fixes the problem. Still it makes absolutely no sense, how some of us have problems, using Time Machine, Wi Fi, and a myriad of other different stuff, and some have none at all. For instance I have absolutely no problem using Wi Fi anymore, but in Mavericks  I could never use it. I've reported the problem to Apple Bug Reporter bugreport.apple.com/

What a nightmare  - i am having the same trouble.  I was on the phone with support - all they could suggest is a re-install.  I found that by going first to my HOME folder I WAS able to access all my documents and picture folders.

Wow, time machine still broken in 10.10.1, What gives? It used to work in 10.9, what jerk(s) broke it in update to 10.10? And broke it so terribly that it's still broken in 10.10.1, for which a fix was announced! I'm an Apple fan, but now embarrassed to tell others that I use a MAC. Apple better reorganize its SQA department -- fire a few people, like maybe the time machine team altogether, or at least the so-called manager -- and rebuild the company reputation. How did SQA let release notes get published saying that the time machine was fixed? That SQA manager gas for to go. Q stands for quality, A stand for Assurance. So much for that. Terrible.

    Ken

I could't agree with you more, I have been a loyal Mac fan and converted our business from PC's to Mac in 2009. I have't been able to do a time machine backup since I updated to Yosemite. I am sorry to say, but the new Apple without Steve Jobs is broken at the moment. How this update was ever released without someone discovering this serious issue is beyond me?? I just hope my machine doesn't have an issue and now I am without a time machine backup, just pathetic.

" I have't been able to do a time machine backup since I updated to Yosemite."

It's a frustrating and irritating problem, but unless you've got an entirely different problem, your Time Machine back ups are continuing to be done. Accessing them is the problem, and there are work-arounds available.

    John

I haven't been able to do a time machine backup because every USB external drive I have tried keeps giving me 'time machine backup failed" errors? I tried erasing, reformatting, repairing using the disk utility and I always get the same errors? I never had this issue when I was running Mavericks using the same drives for my backups and it's the same issue on every one of my machines I recently updated to Yosemite?

I Can't log in either. Perhaps you need a developer account?

You probably will not be allowed to log in without a developer account. However, you can send an email to the same address and they will respond by auto email acknowledging receipt within minutes. I think that it will help increase the change that Apple will respond in a timely manner if we continue to send emails to the support group that needs to address this issue. In addition:  https://www.apple.com/feedback/ was posted by Greenland a few days ago just for this purpose. I send in a complaint everyday and will continue until they correct the issue. This is one of the most important part of the overall operating system and it is Broken at present.

I would like to ask everyone who has posted a problem with time machine on this Support Site to send a complaint to https://www.apple.com/feedback/

If they were made aware as to the number of people with this same problem hopefully  someone at Apple will respond with an update.
