Q: Time Machine not working with Yosemite

I recently upgraded (clean install) from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite.  Before upgrading, I backed up my MacBook Pro via Time Machine on a network server (QNAP.)  Yosemite is up and running now, however, I am unable to access folder history via Time Machine.  Yosemite recognizes the historical backups, however, when I select a specific date in Time Machine, nothing happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have been having similar issues trying to recall old versions of Documents. Got around it my very helpfull suggestions here of clicking into the time machine hard drive.

Can I be clear? this is not how Time machine should be working? its an issue with Yosemite? I bloody well hope so or its back to mavericks for me!

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure this is a bug that will hopefully get adddes rather quickly, I'm pretty sure they didn't mean for TM to work this way.

The solution from "putnik" in the green box is useful if you wish to restore individual files from a previous Time Machine backup.  But what about going back to a previous restore point?  For instance, I want to restore my MacBook Air to a time before I installed that hideous pile of #%^ called Yosemite.  How do I do that?

I am encountering the same problem where I can open time-machine but cannot go back in "time" to restore files.   I do believe I found a work-around to this problem.  First, I logged-off and than logged in.   I navigated to the directory I want to restore and than entered time machine.  I was than able to navigate back to whatever date I needed.  However. if I selected another directory in finder while in time-machine - than the same problem would surface.  The only way around this was to log-out/in again.   For me the problem seemed to be changing directories in finder while in time-machine.

I wonder if you have the same problem that I have with Time Machine in my iMac.  I have many backups.  While in Yosemite, if I want to restore one or two files or a whole folder, i go into Time Machine but all of the Finder Panes that go into the past are grey in color and you cannot select any.  The Finder side bar with the Favorites like Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures is disabled and the forward and back to the past buttons don't work.  I found a work around.  I click on Macintosh HD and all the gray folder backups change color from gray to blue.  I click on a Finder Pane and the blue disappears and is replaced by in actual working Time Machine except that the Favorites like Documents and music are dysfunctional.  I navigate the folders and select what I want to restore and it works.  But  this is a work around for a frozen, almost dead time machine when one goes inside the UI.

Tell me if you have the exact same thing happen.  I have worked with a senior advisor who did extensive logging of the problem and took screen prints of the whole problem and is now submitting them to developers and engineers at Apple.  I bet that on Thursday next, my senior advisor will tell me that a future update will fix this problem!  Anyway, if you have this problem, I think they will fix it soon. Tell me if anyone has the same exact problem.

I have the same problem as you.  Use the Macintosh HD and click on it.  The backups will turn blue.  Click anyway on the blue backups and they will turn to regular backups and you can navigate...but don't use the Favorite on the left side panel like Documents, music, etc. They are dysfunctional and if they work will cause problems.  You needn't log out of Time Machine with my method.  Apple now knows about this problem.  Read my description below.  Is it the same as your problem?

FYI having the same issue and behavior here.  If this has been passed on to Apple engineers already, then great.  A fix is urgently needed to restore Time Capsule functionality,

I have written to Apple about Time Machine problem since beta 6 in great detail.  I sent logs to them.  Today my senior advisor and i made a movie of the whole thing with QuickTime and used a logging device to capture the whole problem.  We sent it to the Engineers via email.  Its just a bug since Yosemite was not quite ready to be released but they did it anyway.  I bought SuperDuper! today.  I partitioned my external drive and have Time Machine on one partition and SuperDuper! clone on the other partition.  Don't worry, I saturated Apple Engineers with the problem.  They will fix it if only to get rid of me.

well done on that front,! Always think on these occasions we should be glad these people aren't in aircraft manufacturing business! It does look look like Yosemite was hurried through.

    cheers

I had the original problem, TM wouldn't backup after Yosemite update. After reading the posts on here I decided to verify the WD 2TB drive I use. After 10 minutes I got bored and cancelled the verify, guess what, it all works again now. Beats me! Now if someone can just tell me how to get the TM icon back at the top of the screen that was always there, but has disappeared since the update, I will be happy!

Same issues.  Loading the Time Machine window with the Applications window already open did seem to yield better results, however, I'm amazed that, even though my last backup was right before the upgrade to Yosemite, the Time Machine backup now taking place says it has to backup over 328gbs of data!

i had the same problem, it takes a while the first time that you backup after the new software. just give it a couple of hours.

I also have a problem with Time Machine, I can access it and if in desktop it will go back into the past but can not access any other directories.  Any help would be great especially if Apple did a fix very quickly as this is a major problem with their new Op system.

I was having issues, as well.  I ended up doing the following and now I can at least browse all of my backups.  I haven't actually attempted to recover anything, but this is an improvement since before I wasn't even able to browse.  The steps I took were:

    1) Disabled Time Machine.

    2) Issued the following in a terminal:

      #> tmutil setdestination /Volumes/YOUR_BACKUP_VOLUME

      #> tmutil associatedisk -a /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD /Volumes/YOUR_BACKUP_VOLUME/Backups.backupd/HOSTNAME/Latest/Macintosh\ HD

      #> tmutil inheritbackup /Volumes/YOUR_BACKUP_VOLUME/Backups.backupd/HOSTNAME

If the volume name (where MacOS is installed) is different than the default of "Macintosh HD", then you'll have to make the appropriate changes.  I'm not sure if the order of the commands makes a difference (as I have tried multiple times to get the old backups to show up).

Running a 'tmutil compare' shows the appropriate deltas for my next incremental backup, as well.
