Q: wifi keeps dropping since Yosemite upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my previously-stable (with Mavericks) wifi connection keeps dropping. I have to click the wifi icon and re-select my network every minute or two. I have turned off bluetooth and uninstalled/reinstalled wifi and my networks. I have rebooted multiple times. No luck so far. It appears that others are having similar problems. Any solutions at this point?

Sorry Rob, I didn't realize that.  Maybe the free Safari developer program will suffice?

My Wi-Fi issue is weird. I use my Mac in 3 places: work, my fiancee's house, and my house. I have no issues with my Wi-Fi other than at work. It drops sporadically, and is irritating when I am in the middle of something online.

coolcomputing, do you know the makes and models of the access points?

I'm wondering if there is a common denominator here.

    I see the problem with a Cisco 3702i 5GHz, and a Meraki MR12 2.4GHz, but more stable on a NetGear N300 2.4GHz.

    I believe they are Cisco.

Which makes it interesting as the two AP's that I have most problems with are Cisco, Meraki is owned by Cisco.

Wonder if that's anything to do with it, or another clutch at straws.

i would suggest that Apple get its act together and figure out what they broke with wi-fi connectivity between Mavericks and Yosemite.

My wi-fi issue has been resolved. I changed the router setting from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz and I am getting a good signal. I still have the bluetooth problem of music sounding like a vinyl with a nasty scratch which hopefully will be resolved shortly. A pity my iMac is too old to make use of Airdrop with my iPad Air. I suppose there is nowt I can do about that.

    • Copy and paste these instructions, because you'll be disconnected from the Internet and you'll need to reboot.
    • Go into your Network Preferences > Select Wi-Fi Service (in the list in the left column) > Click on the options (cog icon) > Select "Make Service Inactive" > Select Apply.
    • Select the same Wi-Fi Service > Delete It ( – ). Reboot.
    • Return to Network Preferences > Create a New Service ( + ).
    • Inside the prompt select Wi-Fi under Interface, name the Service Name something other than Wi-Fi. (I named mine Wi-Fi2. Apparently if you retain the previous Wi-Fi name the WiFi dropping will return on reboot.) > Click Create.
    • Click Apply.

This worked for me. keep you updated. thanks.

    HI all,

For me the 10.10.1 beta fixed all issues I had with WiFi and Bluetooth.

I haven't tried the beta yet, but I found another workaround for the issue by chance if anyone needs it:

    - Open Finder

    - Select Airdrop and keep the window open

    - Try connecting to your Wifi now (it might drop out the 1st time, but try again and it should stay connected)

Hope that helps I'm going to install 10.10.1 and try now

Just FYI - I'm running 10.10.1 Beta - and Wi-Fi still dropped (once) on my MacBook Pro. So no fix quite yet!

I have this problem as well. Very frustrating. I tried everything mentioned in this thread (except going back to Mavericks).

I have a month old MBP Retina. It sometimes works for a long time without issues and then has problems where connections seem to drop or timeout every couple of minutes.

My wife has a 2011 Macbook Air and it does not have this problem after upgrading to Yosemite, so clearly, this is not a problem for every Mac.

Hi everybody, I solved the problem with no workarounds at all. Drastic decision: format HD, reinstall Mountain lion (which is the OS that came with the computer) and upgrade to Mavericks. Connectivity is back at full speed and stable. I think that the general performance of the machine is better than before.

I don't think I will ever install Yosemite again. In the end for me it was just a different look rather than improved functionality.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Luis
