Q: Apple TV cannot connect to iTunes library on MacBook Pro after upgrade to Yosemite/iTunes 12

Does anyone else have this problem?

After upgrading my MacBook Pro to Yosemite / iTunes 12, my Apple TV cannot connect to it's iTunes library anymore.

I have tried the following:

Logging in/out of Apple TV and MacBook Pro's Home Sharing/iTunes account

Turning on/off my wireless router/modem

Turning on/off the Apple TV and MacBook Pro

A combination of the above

Nothing works.

Is this a bug or am I to wait for an update to Apple TV?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Following suggestions in other posts I renamed both my mac air name and iTunes library name.  Now the Apple TV sees the library.  Thanks to everyone!

make sure your firewall on your computer isn't blocking the ATV from connecting.  I tried everything else and then realized my firewall setting were changed after upgrading to Yosemite.  Hope it works for you too.

Hey guys, I tried both renaming my iMac (it was just named "iMac" before, I think due to the update to Yosemite) and disabling stealth mode in preferences -> firewall. A second after it worked again!!! Thanks everyone for the valuable discussion! I hope this solution works.

None of this works for me, unfortunately. I have tried re-naming my computer, restarting - allsorts of things. It still says on the Apple TV that I have to enable Home Sharing on my computer, despite the fact that it is enabled.

So basically, my Apple TV is currently unusable.

As other discovered, Yosemite renames your MBP to a generic name. After I revised it (by adding my name to it), I turned the home sharing off on my Apple TV and then back on again. The Apple TV found the MBP then. (MBP early 2011, Apple TV2).

Here still the same problem. My ATV loses the connection to my library after a while nog using it (for example a night)

In order to get re-connection, there are several steps necessary.

Home Sharing off both iMac and ATV, then restart the device and re-enable Home Sharing.

Once I got a connection with my library I can use my ATV without à problem. The day after the connection is gone.....

I have done all the steps described in this discussion to get a solid connection. Whitout succes :-(

Renamed my iMac in generic name (JoskesiMac)

With a disabled firewall still problems with the connection?

My devices are ATV 3e generation, iMac 2011 and a Timecapsule 3e generation as a router (Set in "bridge mode")

This thread finally helped! Thanks for those that posted tips you'll see which I used below.

I just got a new Apple TV and everything worked fine, even Airplay from Mac/iPhone/etc. to the Apple TV (ATV wired, Mac wired, iOS devices on wifi same router/DNS server), BUT, the Apple TV could not find my iTunes library...I searched and tried all kinds of things, turned off home sharing and turned it on a number of times, restarted everything, nothing worked. Being new, and freshly updated, I didn't see the need for a restore (as you can see below, it didn't need it).

I did several things at once, so, not sure if it was one or the combination (MBP mid 2010, OS X Yo, iTunes 12 ...ATV3):

    1) Changed computer name on Mac (System preferences>Sharing) (hint: even if you don't use sharing, do this, when you share your iTunes library, you are using sharing, but it doesn't show here). (I hadn't done this, it was still MacBook Pro ).

    2) Changed Library Name in iTunes (iTunes>Preferences>General) (Turned off Home Sharing first)

    3) Reset PRAM. ...Put ATV to sleep, then unplugged, turned off router, restarted Mac holding down command & Option & P & R keys, waiting for chime twice, let go.

I then turned on the router, waited a min., plugged in ATV, opened iTunes on Mac, etc.... now works like a charm

If you tried 1 and/or 2, but, not 3, I highly recommend 3, it can solve some issues because some preferences on the Mac get reset.

BTW, the issue was with the Mac...I didn't bother turning off home sharing or doing anything special with the ATV, other than cutting the power, plug in after restarting mac and router.

Note: I set up my Apple TV automatically w/my iPhone (BT on), just put it close to ATV and it'll come up asking for iTunes password...easy breezy, I recommend this. (None of ATV settings were the problem.)

I tried everything everyone else tried on my iMac. Home sharing, etc. Then I just unplugged Apple TV & then plugged it back it & now it works.

I know this post is ancient at this point but I figured I'd respond for anyone else who might come across this issue. I stumbled upon this discussion while googling for an answer; I'm sure I won't be the last!

This article explains what to do to fix the connectivity issue between Apple TV and your iTunes Library (if you are experiencing issues due to upgrading to Yosemite).

Apple TV Cannot Connect to iTunes Library

Worked like a charm; hope this helps!

So the renaming the mac mini in system settings is making it work, for a short period. bu WHY? Why does it keep breaking, and why is a system name change fixing it?

So here is what I found after several frustrating days of fighting with this freaking ATV. All I've been trying to do is play a movie I purchased from iTunes (on my iMac) to my ATV. I've been getting errors that the ATV couldn't connect to iTunes, that it couldn't play the content , that it couldn't connect to my library, yada yada yada. And , it seemed that every time i tried it again, the error changed.  I set every possible sharing option. I reloaded the ATV to factory, connected the ATV to the iMac and updated it to the current version. Nothing, absolutely nothing worked. Here's the thing I tried that worked: Both the iMac and the ATV are on wifi. (signal strong, all devices within 10 feet of the router. FYI - internet speed at 50m down, 10meg up) . As a last resort , I connected the ATV to ethernet and.. BOOM.. EVERYTHING worked as it should.. Not sure why..

Sorry if someone else has posted this info, or if this doesn't fit your situations.. I looked everywhere and didn't see any suggestion to try ethernet. In an effort to help others as frustrated as me i'm posting this in a few of the forums..

    Good Luck.

    Chris

GCM - I use ethernet between my mini and appletv, and still periodically breaks, and needs a system rename.

All I did was unplug Apple TV & plug it back in & it works.
