Q: Apple TV cannot connect to iTunes library on MacBook Pro after upgrade to Yosemite/iTunes 12

Does anyone else have this problem?

After upgrading my MacBook Pro to Yosemite / iTunes 12, my Apple TV cannot connect to it's iTunes library anymore.

I have tried the following:

Logging in/out of Apple TV and MacBook Pro's Home Sharing/iTunes account

Turning on/off my wireless router/modem

Turning on/off the Apple TV and MacBook Pro

A combination of the above

Nothing works.

Is this a bug or am I to wait for an update to Apple TV?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Thanks. Changing the name of the computer in the Sharing preferences sorted the problem for me too.

Changing my computer's name, (I also changed my iTunes library name), then restarted pretty much everything... router, computer, apple TV's, and it worked... eventually.

One thing that was different for me than most of the replies I read in this thread, (I could have easily missed someone else posting this), is that the problem did not show up for me until long after I had upgraded to Yosemite; which is a bit scary because I fear the problem will resurface eventually. - JamesJM

I did every step concerning all replies. Yes, they solved the "Connection" problem..... for a few days :-(  After a while same problems again....

I had no problems for 2 years. After the Yosemite update nothing but trubbles with homesharing (connection AppleTV / iTunes Library)

Waiting for a solution from Apple to solved this BIG problem!!

Ok, so I had the same problem as everyone else. Finally got fixed.

    1) Reset Apple TV (no go)

    2) Changed Time Zone (no go)

    3) Reset Router (no go)

    4) Changed iTunes Library name (no go)

    5) Changed iMac name (SUCCESS)

** I also ensured that I restarted both iTunes and AppleTV after each step.  **

    Hello friends,

changing for example the MAC-name seems a solution for while.

In my case I had again problems after a few days not using the ATV.

Today there was again a OSX-update. Hopefully the one with a steady solution.

No luck for me with this. I've done everything but the Apple TV won't recognise my iMac (a 2013 model, Yosemite). The really, really stupid thing is it recognises my Macbook Pro straight away.

This really is a most annoying and unacceptable bug!

What worked for me was to assign a specific IP address to each appleTV.

Since there is no static ip address config in the appleTV, I did it through my Airport Extreme router.  There was a "reservations" tab that would assign an ip address to a MAC address.  I imagine other routers would have similar settings

    I fixed it!

    • On Ethernet from iMac to Apple TV. Did not appear in apple TV, although my macbook pro did on wifi.
    • Upgraded 2011 iMac to Yosemite from Mavericks did not work.
    • Restoring apple TV didn't work.
    • Resetting the network on apple TV didn't work.
    • Unplugging/repowering didn't help.
    • Preferences>share my library>share entire library didn't work.

What did work was iTunes>file>home sharing> turn on home sharing.  I didn't realize there are two sharing "switches" in iTunes!

Why is that?  Why would apple put one in preferences and one in the File menu?

    Exactly!

Same here, I already posted this above.

There are two separate settings in iTunes both regarding the homesharing feature:

1st is under: iTunes -> Preferences -> Sharing- > Share my Library on my local network

2nd is under: File -> Home Sharing -> Turn on/off home sharing

I missed the second one as well. After I enabled the second option it started working and I haven't had any problems since.

    Very weird ux design though...

Thank you Louis. This worked for me. I hope the proxy thingy is not important to any other program or security Cheers
