OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

My worst Wifi problems are gone with 10.10.4, I never have minute-long disconnects of connectivity (while the WiFi-Interface stayed connected), so I am pretty sure this was linked to discoveryd. Shouldn't everyone who still has WiFi problem state if they already updated to 10.10.4 or 10.11?

I thought I was in heaven.

Because of shoulder problems, this week I had to break out my bluetooth keyboard and magic trackpad this week and, lo and behold, the two started disconnecting twice a day (batteries fully charged). I had to unpair and re-pair them to get them working again.

I now tried this 'Bluetooth DUN' voodoo dance, I'll keep you posted if it helped.

best regards

simon

Here is a further update on my investigations regarding the Wifi Issues. Our IT service bought a mid 2010 10'' MacBook and did a fresh installation of Yosemite 10.10.4. They have no issue connecting to our WPA2 enterprise network on 5 GHz. I now created a fresh installation on an USB drive, but still have the same issues as before. The hardware and the firmware on the two Laptops are different, as well as the Locale (whatever this is?).

mid 2010: Card: Airport Extreme (0x14E4, 0x93), Firmware: Broadcom BCM 43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.24), Locale:ETSI

mid 2012: Card: Airport Extreme (0x14E4, 0xEF), Firmware: Broadcom BCM 43xx 1.0 (7.15.166.24.3), Locale: FCC

I visited the Genius Bar a few days ago, and they didn't have a solution to the problem other than that this should have been sorted out with 10.10.4. Their advice was to have a clean install of Yosemite on an USB stick (see above).

I have gone thru all 219 pages and still have not found a solution that works....

my main home machine is an iMac

my ISP is ATT uVerse

everything was working fine until a couple of weeks ago.... I dont remember which Yosemite update I installed but my internet connection speeds dropped down to pre-dialup speeds

here are the numbers for the router I am connected to:

I've had 3 uVerse tech's out to my house - they replaced the modem with their newest model - they ran a brand new line from their box to my house - you an see from the info above that I have a max DL speed of 56368 - if only that were still true....

I have been using wireless for the past 3 years, but again, after doing an OS 10.10.x update, my DL speeds are now around 2mbps instead of my previously normal 24-30mbps speeds

the last tech even gave me a 30 foot ethernet cable to try/use instead of using wireless but my dl speeds still suck

has anyone found any other possible solutions?

Hi osihara! Just thought I'd pop in. Well you did eliminate the Wi-Fi card. Glad to hear the Dongle is getting by (barely). I noticed a firmware update push on my Mac Mini (2012). I didn't notice much. My Mac is running Windows 7 Pro quite well actually. Mavericks only because I have to have it for Boot Camp. I bought a different computer all together and use my Mac for Windows environment. I got bloody tired of all this waste of time with Apple and this OS X disorder. Controlled testing should take place. Beta Testing is for Beta Testers. A released OS X is for public. If it would make a difference, I would buy a new OS X from Apple. Well, my friend, rant off. I hope The Captain will get attention and respect and be better. Cheers!! John

I have the same vintage iMac that you do, with the same WiFi hardware, and I have absolutely no network issues whatsoever. Explain then ,why you have issues and I don’t. Same machine, same operating system, possibly different modem/router configuration. Yet Apple is to blame and it couldn’t possibly be some other factor out the hundreds of external factors that go into a stable WiFi connection?

@ikrupp - thats an excellent question

it could well be a difference in network settings

as I noted, uVerse swapped out everything at my house and all tests show that the speeds at the router are where they should be
