OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Please, do not wait for the Apple to fix your Wi-Fi problem. They always created some Wi-Fi connectivity issues as long I can remember. I do own Apple computer and portable equipment for many years and do not want to say that but the only resolution or option you have left is purchasing a Windows operating machine. I do have the same Wi-Fi problem since downloading Yosemite on my late 2012 i-Mac last year. My wife's Mac Book-Air works great on Maverick. I should never "upgrade" to Yosemite.

I'm dead too. Was doing the delete the config files and restarting fix for a while. Probably like 2-3 times a month since yosemite came out. Last week my wifi dropped and nothing is working. Combed through every "fix" online and nothing. Even replaced my airport card because someone said maybe that crapped out since my macbook pro is from 2008. Still nothing. It ***** with the new OS set to drop next month. Part of me hopes it fixes all this and part of me is scared to upgrade again and have even worse problems. Should never have left mavericks...

Dear cairoli91

You could go back to Mavericks. If you have regular backups you could restore from a pre Yosemite backup and then restore all your documents from a backup you made just before the restore from the old backup. Since I have not tried this myself to be on the safe side I probably would also copy my important files onto an external hard disk for safety. App store purchases can be reinstalled from the store if need be, but you could also copy the Apps to the disc.

If you want to do a clean install you can also re-download the Mavericks installer from the Purchases tab the App store (http://osxdaily.com/2013/11/01/re-download-os-x-mavericks-installer-mac-app-stor e/). Of course rolling back to an older operating system is not really recommended. I used this method to create a clean USB installer for Mavericks to test if my hardware had a problem.

Before the roll back I would probably test a clean install of Yosemite on a USB stick or starting the Mac in Safe Mode (Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support) to check if there is not something else broken.

The danger with the roll back of course is that some of the updated App's won't work for Mavericks and that of course you have all the security holes that the consecutive Upgrades have closed. The procedure with the clean install from the Mavericks installer is not as straight forward as the roll-back from the Time Machine Backup

I've considered this a couple times but like you stated I would have to deal with all the holes my recent updates would leave me. I have tried a clean install of Yosemite and that had no effect on my problems. As much as I'd like to go back to Mavericks, I don't regularly back up my machine and it would be a load of work to reinstall all my apps so I'm stuck with Yosemite for the long haul. Just hoping for a real fix to this issue or that El Capitain addresses it so I can use my wifi again.

I feel for you. I managed to revert to Mavericks for my desktop and it was a huge hassle. Also just as a warning to everyone else, updating my 2013 MacBook Air to 10.10.5 COMPLETELY broke my wifi functionality, I'd highly recommend against it: https://imgur.com/a/bbgPL#0.
Really confused how a brand as valuable and with such established trust as Apple can fail so horribly at something so fundamental to modern computing.

I've been raging since I've updated to Yosemite on my MBA mid 2011.

So this is the first time I seem to find a solution that seems to last.

2 things I did:

The keychain access trick (but that lasted all but an hour).

and this 5ghz band thingy.

My supplier told me not to use it because it was more advanced and less reliable but truly, after going to my 192.1.xxx and Clicking advanced wireless settings, clicking never to 2.427 GHZ, and clicking always to 5ghz, (I also added MEDIA to the name of network to differentiate them and find them), it looks like I've solved my problems. I'll keep you posted.

fingers crossed.

Oh my gosh, I made the huge mistake of upgrading my iMac Late 2012 from Mountain Lion to Yosemite (10.10.5) today and spent the last 10 hours trying to connect to the internet.

Tried all the fixes and workarounds (deactivating Airdrop, logging out iCloud, resetting (Huawei) router, resetting SMC, zapping PRAM, trashing network preferences, creating custom location, resetting etc...) I could find on here but nothing worked. Disabling Bluetooth isn't an option due to bluetooth mouse and keyboard. When turning off/on Wi-Fi, I will get a connection for 20 seconds before it drops again. All other computers and devices are connecting fine. Ended up using the hotspot feature of my iPhone 6 so I could have a somewhat stable connection but I can't keep doing that everyday !

What's up Apple ? Never had such problems after a OS update. I thought I have been very careful with waiting MONTHS after release, but still.

PS: Am I the only one who, beside the WiFi issue, also encounter ethernet drops or a very very slow connection ?

Aug 21, 2015 6:14 AM in response to kristelttm

I almost never used ethernet until last year when these problems started but I have always felt like the connection was drastically slower than it should be. I noticed it most when I was at work using a desktop next to my macbook. Both using same ethernet connection and the desktop was almost twice as fast always. I think internet in general is just screwed up in Yosemite. Problem is that Im reading about people using the El Capitian beta and they are having internet issues still too so idk fingers crossed someone somewhere ends this issue.

I hoped moving to a brand new house with a brand new router from my internet provider plus a clean install of Yosemite would help. But now my internet speed is reduced to about 2% of normal at home when I have bluetooth activated...... I have a MacBook Pro retina early 2013 with 10.10.5. Still had no internet at all in my old apartment. None of the Yosemite updates have had any effect. Wifi works perfectly on all other devices (without Yosemite on it). But wifi works perfect at my office on the same machine with bluetooth active and all. Had no issues before I updated to Yosemite. Pretty tired of this now.....

Having WiFi issues for a long time now with several MacBooks with Yosemite. WiFi does not reconnect after sleep, every day an exclamation mark in the WiFi symbol in the menubar that does not disappear after several times turning WiFi off and on. Even at a 1 meter distance from the WiFi antenna. But what did 'help' to get a solid connection is turning off the n-standard on my router (so I only have b/g now). It is very slow compared to the speed I used to have and 1/5 of the cable bandwidth I pay for, but at least I have a connection again.

We do have 5 MacBooks in our home. The old ones with MacOS 10.6 and 10.8 did not have any problem at all, visitors with Windows laptops neither, but the MacBooks Air and Pro with Yosemite could not connect anymore every day over and over. Apple user since the Apple ][+, but I have to say last year Apple's software (Yosemite, iMovie, iTunes, Photo's instead of iPhoto) does not give me the best brand experience...

Update from me. Apple have again asked me for more data. I like that. However the situation has changed for me. under EC Beta it has started to be a bit more dependable. I think it has been altered to check more frequently and automatically perform the task I do, which is to turn WiFi off and then back on and reselect the network. Seems to work ok as bodge fix from Apple. But the extra issue of not automatically connecting to my network after waking from sleep has started for me. Never used to have this [particular symptom in any noticeable way. Only on occasion. Along with loosing total connection to any network attached drives but have the computer insist that not only is it available but is connected and no matter any ejecting, reconnecting, wifi restarting etc will give me actual reconnection with my NAS and backup drive. Only a full logout of user will do it. This is likely a temporary bug due to their messing around trying to solve the big issue we all seems to have in variation.

I have recently added a third Apple Extreme to my network to strengthen the link between the house main router and the office in the yard; which contains this computer. Have started using an iPhone app called Wi-Fi Sweet Spot along with SpeedTest. Sweet Spot allows me to test the strength of my LAN Wi-Fi independently of my IP Connection. Speed Test naturally tests the performance of the entire pathway to an offsite server. Sweet Spot was instrumental in rectifying any setup issues with my network in hopes my issue was just a compounding issue with my particular computer on an unstable network. Most of the connection was fine however and the issues are still mostly there. I also switched over from 10.0.1.# to 10.0.0.# which seemed to coincide with the last EC Beta update and the subsequent improvement.

Third thing I mentioned some time back I wanted to take my iMac to the city and run it on my parents LAN for a while. I'ts a long drive and I need to stay a while so this has been hard to organise. But this past week end I managed to spend some quality time with my parents and their network. I did not witness a single incident with my Wi-Fi... They are using some awful slow router provided to them by Telstra. I was shocked how weak and slow their signal is even right by it.

Anyway off to gather data for Apple.
