OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I just realized Apple came out with a new update Two days ago 10.10.1 .... I just installed it. It’s been an hour since installed, so far so good. We shall see...keeping my fingers crossed. It fixed that annoying problem with Message Agent and Cloud asking for keychain access every time I restarted. That’s fixed. I Hope the wifi is fixed now. so far so good.

My wifi issue after I upgraded to Yosemite seems somewhat unique. When wifi is turned on on my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 my network slows down, meaning every device connected to my network has a slow connection. I am getting speeds no faster than .4-1.5 Mbps for any device connected to my network when wifi on my MBP is turned on. As soon as I turn off wifi on my MBP, my speeds return to normal on my other devices (2 iPad Airs, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and wife's MBP Mid '09 running Snow Leopard). The "fixes" I have tried with no success are:

1.) Restarting MBP and router (Time Capsule) multiple times

2.) Restarting modem multiple times

3.) Upgrading to 10.10.1

4.) Turning off Bluetooth

5.) Deleting iPhone from Bluetooth (I read where that worked for someone else)

6.) Deleting files in the folder and then eventually deleting whole folder Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

7.) Reset System Management Controller

8.) PRAM reset

9.) Deleting and creating a new network location, mentioned a few posts above

10.) Turning off Handoff on my iOS devices (handoff is not supported on my MBP)

I'm sure there are other things I have tried that I am forgetting. None of these have worked at all. The only way to get my network back to normal performance is to turn the wifi on my MBP off rendering it useless. Any other ideas for a fix?

I fixed it by ordering a new PC with Windows 8.1

Apple either cannot fix this, or will not fix it. They won't even admit it's happening. I've purchased a Macbook Pro annually for years, but now I am done. Nothing personal, Apple, but if ANY company bungled something this bad and didn't fess up or fix it, I'm out.

It is sad to see that Apple's level of narcissism has reached the point of self destruction. So long, and thanks for all the dmg's

GOOD... I liked it Better When Apple was smaller and we didn't have all these former Windows Jerks coming over to Apple because of the iPhone Halo effect.

And Now That Apple is Kewel I have to deal with all these Ex-Windows people who say they've always like Apple until I ask them some Q & A about Apple

from 15 years ago and they get it all wrong... I worked selling Apple Computers when it was the Apple //c & the Mac SE from 1988-1992.

I''ve Had Maybe 6 Apple Computers since then... NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THEM... unless I caused it and quickly reverted back.

Good Riddance, we need to clear out this Thread for some good Software How-Tos, Tips & Tricks for Working Mac People like myself.

It is not a virtue to only know Apple. Many of us have extensive knowledge of both Microsoft and Apple (not to mention Linux). That you have never had a problem with Mac is a sample of one, out of millions of people and billions of possible combinations of configurations and uses. That your reasoning is fallacious is taught in elementary science and business courses. You should consider getting a bachelor's degree. That you sold Apple products is 1988 is downright disturbing. This suggests that you are least in your 40s, yet you write, and you think, like a pre-teen troll. You are simply in denial about Apple. You probably also deny global warming, the holocaust, and the moon landing. You are not contributing to the discussion, but are taking away from it. Again, like a pre-teen troll. Please stop.

Hi All

My 1p worth: accidentally upgraded to Yos 10.1 this morning and experienced the wi-fi dropping issue for the 1st time. (But also experienced the Need a password" issue too and thats not first time)

I did the sleep+restart+shutdown sequence but no improvement, so did the SMC reset and so far touch wood...

Hope this helps some of you

I also discovered etrecheck today - looks good. This is what it collects for you to post here so the Lever 99 trillion pointers can diagnose and prescribe 🙂

Problem description:

Wi-fi connection very fragile after upgrade to OS 10.10.1

Sleep+restart+shutdown sequence didn’t help so did an SMC

So far so good but thoughts I would get a step ahead and run this

Upgraded to Yosemite and I've crawled to a stop even with the patch (10.10.1). The only thing that works is to turn-off Bluetooth and then I'm sailing again. Trouble is that I use my MBA for work and rely on Bluetooth mouse, keyboard and a second monitor (so I can't connect ethernet via thunderbolt) -- this is mission critical and it's failing!

C'mon Apple, get another patch out to fix this issue!

Can you uninstall or deselect AirDrop? I've heard AirDrop may be part of the problem but have no direct experience with that.

Elitist Jerk. 25 years a user, Level 1 nil points: guess that makes you a really helpful considerate member of society

Some of us ex-Windows users came over to Apple because we believed we were coming to something wonderfully different. In the main I am very happy I did and even more so when the members of this community assist - fortunately they're mostly not like you.

LOL! Good luck with that. PC’s have there own bunch of problems, worst problems then a few Mac bugs. My mom has a PC and was having all kinds of problems, turns out the PC had 157 virus. God only knows how many were hacking her and what info they got.

Anyways I am happy to say the update did fix ALL my Mac problems and everything is working smoothly again. Thank you Apple. As for everyone else that is still having problems... it may be a DNS cache thing. Try clearing your DNS computer cache and if that doesn't work go to the Apple store and have them look at it. It’s free! That was going to be my next step if the bugs did not get cleared out. It’s so frustrating. I should know better then to upgrade so quickly. No matter what...rather Mac or PC there are always bugs to work out with the 1st new version of OS. Lesson learned, I will wait a while before jumping to upgrade again.

So my problem is I am traveling. Guess I can try without bluetooth, but why should that matter? Do they bother to field test these things? I have never had any troule getting on the networks in Jacksonville and Charlotte but now I am. I was able to get my home problem worked out but not at airports. Since I'm traveling and have work to do, I can't afford to expend my data plan with tethering. I sent feedback to Apple at apple.com/feedback. Everybody needs to do that.

Agree about PC's

I've spent most my adult life removing crap from other peoples windows boxes, bottom line is, if you need a computer as a tool get a Mac otherwise get the latest toy.

About this thread

Throughout this thread the one thing in common with all the deletions and re-configuring everyone is doing, is. RESETTING CACHES (which is why it's only temporary) It started in 10.9.4 and has become a little more widespread in 10.10.

so my conclusion is it is a bug and being so no amount of re-configuring will fix it

All we can do as users is tell our story and hope it helps point others to a temp solution.

My iMac 14.2 and MBP 8.3 have been working great for a couple of weeks now and I wonder why are mine working fine after a simple cache reset and not yours,

It may have something to do with my home router and that I have always configured it to allocate specific IP's over DHCP thus ensuring each device always gets the same IP whilst being set to auto? ( i suppose my caches stay a bit more stable this way, dunno)

Although we shouldn't have to re-configure anything to have a normal functioning machine, in this case we do until a fix arrives,

I see it as an opportunity to learn something new and before somebody says 'but I'm losing work / money' through this, well you have learnt something very valuable haven't you now.

MacAwesomeShithead8812: It's people like you who give Apple users a bad name. Sadly you're no different than a Raiders or Seahawks fan. Stop acting like a troll or a 12 year old. Sit down, shut up, and unless you have something worthwhile to add to the conversation, just leave it alone. Stop being a troll. I really wish this forum had a few additional features, mainly a thread type list and a report button.

There are obviously a number of people who have had issues with their Wifi, or this thread wouldn't be as popular as it is.

There is obviously nothing that we as users can do to cause this issue or fix this issue due to the number of people who 1) report having an issue after upgrading and 2) have no luck after attempting the fixes.

That said, I'm sad to see even MORE people having issues after the 10.10.1 update. So far this week my connection seems mostly stable, however it's still disconnected a few times.

Sadly Apple is going downhill and losing the technology battle. Yes, we are getting good solid hardware, but that's worthless when the software isn't functioning. Hopefully they will roll out another update very soon with more wifi fixes and make it much more solid. I'm really hoping I don't have to roll my computer back to Mavericks (which by the way is not just a "quick" thing to do).

I enjoy Apple's products, but I am beginning to eye the newer Droid phones which have additional features that the iPhone just doesn't have. If that's the case, and I end up going away from the iphone, I'm not going to spend $1200-$2400 on a new macbook for my next computer. The issues that I'm having with Yosemite are driving me nuts, and the lack of innovation for the iphone isn't helping.

Apple was never small, and you are not a part of it.

I didn't buy an Apple because I thought it was cool. I loved the quality, both software and hardware. I have always owned Windows PC's at the same time, but preferred Mac for my personal use. The time you worked at Apple probably had some amazing innovations and I'm glad you got to experience it.

I''ve Had Maybe 6 Apple Computers since then... NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THEM... unless I caused it and quickly reverted back.

Purchasing 6 computers in 25 years doesn't make you an expert in anything, except perhaps penny-pinching.

Good Riddance, we need to clear out this Thread for some good Software How-Tos, Tips & Tricks for Working Mac People like myself.

you see, when something like happens with Microsoft, they admit it, and roll out a patch. Whereas Apple released a new OS with known, major problems-and they have only released vague updates with ambiguous definitions so it is impossible to hold them accountable for failed fixes. That is the part that irks me. If Mcdonalds sold me french fries that turned out to be dog turds, and I told them, and they upgraded my french fries to cat turds, I would stop going to Mcdonalds.
