Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

 

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

 

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

 

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

    Guys i tried this :

     

    Guys, I have a Macbook 2008 Unibody, upgrading to Yosemite killed my wifi too. Cannot turn it on at all, and it was stuck "off".

     

    None of the solutions so far in thread worked (clearing PRAM, deleting configuration folders etc. Did nothing).

     

    But I fixed it, heres how:

     

    1. Open Network Preferences, click once on the WiFi adapter in the list there on the left. Then click the little cog icon at the bottom and select "Make Service Inactive". Click APPLY.

    2. Then click on the WiFi in the same list there again, and then click the - button to delete it. Click APPLY.

    3. Reboot the Mac.

    4. Once rebooted, go back into the Network Prefs, and under the network adapter list click the + button, and then in the dropdown list (which is probably showing Bluetooth by default) select WiFi. For the name field, change it from WiFi to WiFi2. It's important you add something to the name here (I've just suggested to add a number 2), or else it will break again on next reboot. Click APPLY.

     

    You should then have a working WiFi, that survives reboots.



    I didn't work. It lasted around 27 minutes and then my connection dropped again.

    I connected my wifi again and it lasted 30 seconds. I think i ran out of options, this was the last one. Maybe someone can try it and let us know if it works.

    I have a Mac and a Linksys router.  After I restart my Mac, the wi-fi picks-up my home signal for about 10 seconds and then drops it.  I have to manually go into preferences and reconnect.  I haven't had an issue with being booted off the network, but my Mac doesn't automatically join the network.  I've tried every solution recommended on this thread to "fix" the problem, but nothing works.  I do have an Apple router that runs a separate music network in my house (it's not connected to internet but instead connected to my Air laptop).  I'm going to switch routers and see if the Apple router will be recognized by the Mac.  Regardless, I wish I hadn't been so eager to "upgrade" to Yosemite.  Thank goodness I didn't upgrade my Air.

    One more observation, if at work wifi connection drops every 3 minutes where I have dont know what kind of router, than at home where I have time capsule no problem with wifi at all.

    I had the same problem.

    I read in somewhere that if turn off the bluetooth the internet will work good..

    In my case, worked perfect.. but.. without bluetooth.. i can not use my wireless keyboard and mouse, it *****

    No luck for me either. I'm thinking I will just uninstall OS X Yosemite. This is my 3rd time typing this reply!!!!!! SO FRUSTRATING! Ridiculous. I have work to do and do not have time to reconnect to the internet every 3 seconds. My wifi worked *perfectly* prior to Yosemite.

    Same here with latest TimeCapsule and iMac 27'' (late 2013). Sudden WiFi-Drops while running TM-Backups made me connect a long lan-cable to my iMac to able to continue working with it.

    Same problem on a mid-2010 MB Pro and a 2011 (I think) MB Air. Have tried everything mentioned in this thread with no success. Absolutely abysmal QA lately Apple. FIX FAST.

    Same problem as most here. I can often simply switch back and forth between my 2.4ghz and my 5ghz bands and maintain connectivity but what a PITA! I've tried most of the solutions mentioned here with no success so far. Come on Apple, this is crazy! This is reminiscent of my old Windows experiences and why I left them for Apple!

    I have the MacBook Pro 13" and after installing Yosemite I have the same issue. It drops AP with strong signal and connect to other wifi with weak signal etc. We have more APs in company building (same brand Mikrotik).

    But with Mavericks I had a problem in our branch when I was connected fine but it took too long to open some webpage. Then I just clicked reload and it was open immediately. In another our company building it was fine but now after installing Yosemite it stopped working. I will se if something changes in our branch. That's really weird.

    I'm new to these support communities -- I joined only because my wifi stops working every 10 minutes or so after upgrading to Yosemite -- and have what might be a dumb question. Given this site is hosted by apple, don't the apple folks ever read this stuff and comment? If only to say, we got it, we are working on it? In other words, where do we go to see if Apple is on this?

    That just worked for me, for the first time in 4 days my safari works and the network too. I did what bburwick says, go to

     

    System Preferences --> Network --> Wi-fi --> Advanced --> Preferred Networks


    and by magic everything comes back. So you know, there is a list in "Preferred networks" with all the servers you use or have used, and my wireless network was way back behind i moved it to the top, hit ok and apply, restart my safari and by magic everything is back to normal, hope it can help others!!!

    4. Delete SystemConfiguration
      • Finder > Go (on your toolbar) > Computer > HD > Library > Preferences > Delete your SystemConfiguration. Reboot.
    5. Reset PRAM
      • Reset your PRAM (Haven't tried it myself so I don't feel right instructing others how to do it, sorry!).

     

    Sorry if this isn't as comprehensive or clear as you may need. If you need more clarification, I'll keep this thread open and check periodically.

    None of these have worked.  I lose wifi within 2-4 hours.

     

    The only thing that has worked for me is moving to a 2.4Ghhz network but all that does is buy me more time as it eventually fails too.

    Bluetooth has always been turned off.  So that is not in conflict.

     

    This morning, I checked my preferred network priority settings ...

    System Preferences --> Network --> Wi-fi --> Advanced --> Preferred Networks

     

    My Wireless network had shifted in priority below my iPhone and my iPad.

    I selected my Wifi network dragged it to the top. Hit Ok then apply.

     

    It has been two hours. I have not experienced any wireless network failure.  Here is hoping.

    I only have my home network as a "Preferred Network" and the problem persists.
