Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

The proxy settings were already unselected and still, WiFi drops every 3 hours or so... Running 10.10.1 didn't fix anything as far as WiFi is concerned...

Unless you bought a New Mac with Yosemite pre installed, you paid exactly nothing for an upgraded OS. If it is not working out for you, the easiest solution is to downgrade back to Mavericks, which was also free. What we pay a premium for is some pretty elegant hardware. The software is free. If you do not like the Mac OS, you have the option of running Windows or Linux. While Linux is free, last time I checked, Microsoft does not give Windows away. It is also worth reflecting on the fact that  WiFi is a relatively new phenomenon. Anyone remember Appletalk and the 56K modem? And...if this stuff really has yer panties in a bunch, you can always connect with ethernet. You do remember ethernet don't you?

Just for some historical perspective, the Mac Plus was introduced in Jan 1986. It had a Motorola 68000 processor running at 8 Mhz, an 800K floppy drive, a 9 inch 2 bit monochrome monitor and ran on OS 3.0. It retailed at $2,599.00 which equals $5,644.00 in inflation adjusted dollars. Its lack of a fan caused overheating resulting in soldered joint fractures. I had one and I must have desoldered the fly back transformer 3 or 4 times.

Current iMac 2.7 Ghz processor with 8 Gigs of RAM, a 1 Terabyte drive and a 21 inch 24 bit color monitor all for less than half the inflation adjusted cost of the Mac Plus.

I will reiterate, consider the gazillion lines of interactive code required to take advantage of this amazing processing power and you may appreciate that correction and testing takes time. The fact that this problem is relatively limited makes tracking down the issue that much more complicated. I don't think anybody would be very happy is Apple issued an inadequately tested fix that made matters worse. The one thing that they could do better is to publicly address the problem through the press.

So, until the issue is resolved, buy an ethernet cable or downgrade and have some patience.

    Regards,

    Chris

Common, nobody is yelling or screaming. Not on this forum. Why to exaggerate? Some of us are simply expressing our frustration and sharing personal situations or experiences the best we can. Please understand that not everyone is a troubleshooter. Traditionally or historically Apple's ability to design software/hardware without some network interference is less than successful. We the consumers are not unreasonable to expect properly functioning products for our money. Should we prepare our self for gradually progressing degradation in quality of consumer goods without any reaction?

    PS;

Downgrading is not Apple approved option. Once upgraded for an average consumer is not recommended or easy to go back.

This must be the lamest response I've read so far!! Whether you pay for it or not doesn't matter. Apple prides itself in releasing the best hardware/software possible.

Yosemite is no different and the Discussion community is there to help improve upon that premise and believe it or not but Apple engineers do need these bugs to be reported one way or another.

I had none of the WiFi problems with Yosemite other were reporting till I upgraded to 10.10.1. It seems 10.10.1 just enlarged the pool of Apple users with WiFi problems. I have a late 2012 Mini. iPhone & iPad both happy. Ran speed test on Mac Mini got download of 0.95 ran on iPad Air got 8.07 both WiFi.

Clearly this is a Yosemite problem that I did not have with any other device or on Mavericks.

Correct. But just because you expect something that someone else seeks to deliver, does NOT necessarily make it work.

What sets people aside is how they react and behave once their expectations have not been met.

Should we prepare our self for gradually progressing degradation in quality of consumer goods without any reaction?

The quality is actually getting better and better. And MUCH more advanced. I would personally rather sit here and work with 10.10 on a  2014 rMBP screamingly fast and do a bit of Network trouble shooting until a fix is provided than sit with a Mac G3 and a Modem.

The way I see the future is as a community ALL striving to make the product we all use and love better.... Better by HELPING when something goes Wrong instead of saying nothing when stuff goes right... The sheer capabilities of OS X and especially 10.10 are so vastly ahead of any competition and being on the bleeding edge means that stuff can go wrong. And it did for networking. For many.

It is in everyone's interest to get this bug squashed as soon as possible. And the fastest way to achieve that is to bring detailed reports and repro-cases to Apple's Engineers. So that is the route I take !

I'm afraid that you are confusing quality with technological advancement. Quality is a sum of a high level of value or excellence. Naturally it's a simplified definition.

I have used Mac since '96 and the quality of the quality of their products, hardware and software, FAR supersede the past..

OS X - was unusable for until Panther Arrived, making it barely useable. Tiger took slowly other folks aside from freaks began porting to Mac in a widespread matter.

Stating that Apple's quality is getting worse based on an OBVIOUS and FIXABLE BUG.... Is downright ignorant and nonsense.. Pls don't take it personal.

For it is NOT. It is a Fact ;-)

    Hello,

I did the update Yosemite 10.10.1 and wifi still does not go. Whereas with Mavericks there were no worries !!!

Thank you to do some things because we are increasingly complaining about the forum.

    I have a Macbook Pro mid-2010

I have the same problem, interference between Bluetooth and Wifi, on Y 10.10 and Y 10.10.1 as well. I have tried unsuccessfully everything described here.

    No clear solution.

I've had this problem for ages, tried many of the thing on here then just gave up.  There would be some success, then boom, wireless goes down again.  Was frequently getting only getting 1-2 Mbps.  Couldn't stream movies and audio anymore, just terrible.

Thought I'd wait for an update from Apple, and along one comes.  Installed it, but still had the same problems.

But what's this?  A couple of days later, it's working again.  Only one thing I did, power down, removed the power cable and restarted. I was doing this to resolve another problem so didn't bother checking the speed again (it hadn't work before). That was yesterday, and today I checked the speed, it's back to 50Mbps internet, and my media streaming is working wonderfully.

Maybe the second restart fixed it after the update.

Mine will just drop whenever it feels like, and the speeds I have when it is connected remind me of my 14.4 days........this is absurd. I have a 200 dollar router and had blazing fast speeds when I was running Mavericks. Now? Complete garbage. Was hoping the update would fix it......nope. FIX THIS APPLE!

It has gotten worse for me after the patch update this week.

Previously I was able to use terminal to force the wifi off, and the on, and off and on etc. Now that doesn't seem to work very well either. Getting sick of shutting down/restarting and zapping the PRAM SMC every hour.

I should also mention as I'm attempting to evaluate the Wifi (connectivity monitor etc) the machine will occasionally freeze and restart. Mouse is unresponsive for 20 seconds or so.
