Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

GOOD... I liked it Better When Apple was smaller and we didn't have all these former Windows Jerks coming over to Apple because of the iPhone Halo effect.

Apple was never small, and you are not a part of it.

And Now That Apple is Kewel I have to deal with all these Ex-Windows people who say they've always like Apple until I ask them some Q & A about Apple

from 15 years ago and they get it all wrong... I worked selling Apple Computers when it was the Apple //c & the Mac SE from 1988-1992.

I didn't buy an Apple because I thought it was cool. I loved the quality, both software and hardware. I have always owned Windows PC's at the same time, but preferred Mac for my personal use. The time you worked at Apple probably had some amazing innovations and I'm glad you got to experience it.

I''ve Had Maybe 6 Apple Computers since then... NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THEM... unless I caused it and quickly reverted back.

Purchasing 6 computers in 25 years doesn't make you an expert in anything, except perhaps penny-pinching.

Good Riddance, we need to clear out this Thread for some good Software How-Tos, Tips & Tricks for Working Mac People like myself.

you see, when something like happens with Microsoft, they admit it, and roll out a patch. Whereas Apple released a new OS with known, major problems-and they have only released vague updates with ambiguous definitions so it is impossible to hold them accountable for failed fixes. That is the part that irks me. If Mcdonalds sold me french fries that turned out to be dog turds, and I told them, and they upgraded my french fries to cat turds, I would stop going to Mcdonalds.

    BYE WINDOWS RAT!

Rats will roam the Earth long after humanity has killed itself.

and the fact that no big points people engaging in this thread tells us that there isn't an obvious answer.

I enjoy Apple's products, but I am beginning to eye the newer Droid phones which have additional features that the iPhone just doesn't have.

No no nooooo don't overdo it man!! Keep your iPhone. Android is packed to the gills with useless features.

Yeah, i think that if there was a real end-user fix, it would have been discovered.

I got mine to work by disabling dual band switching on my Airport. But my bandwidth with Wifi streaming still chokes.

Despite the fact that I have an Apple computer, Apple router, and AppleTV and it all should have worked right away-there was no better environment for Apple products to work in!

I don't mind troubleshooting, I work in IT after all. But the nail in the coffin for me was Apple's failure to respond, acknowledge, or fix this issue-and-the fact that this issue existed since beta and was released to hit a launch date anyways.

It was with a heavy head that I ordered a Windows PC. It took me weeks to pick one out. Half of them look like electric shavers, and the rest look like a NASCAR. With Macs, my annual choice was easy. Buy the new one. Done! With PC, ugh I ended up buying a "gaming laptop" to get the specs I wanted. So now I have a super awesome, high powered machine with a freakin' bright red Dragon on the lid. Shake. My. Head. but I did what I had to do to.

I've been suffering from this same ailment since I upgraded on Thursday.   After much gnashing of teeth (PRAM, SMC, reinstall of Yosemite, etc. etc.) I finally **RESOLVED** it by creating a new Network Location.

    *under Network Preferences

    *Click drop-down for Location

*Create a new location.. (I called mine "Internet")

    *that's it!

    hope it helps you too

    This helped me. Thank you

Tried all of this including the new network location to no avail.

I'm still hoping 10.10.1 does it for me.

Me too, having same issue with 10.10.1 -- I just upgraded from Mavericks 10.9.5 straight to Yosemite 10.10.1 on a Macbook Pro 15" (early 2011). Had no wifi problems with Mavericks. Now suddenly I cannot stay online for more than new seconds. I had to physically connect a cat5 network cable to the router in order to be able to post this! APPLE: HELP!

I don't know how long this "fix" will last, but I opened my router settings and switched the WiFi radio from channel 11 to channel 10, rebooted the router, and reconnected. Ever since I have had WiFi connectivity. No reason I know of why this would need to be required or why it would work. The prior channel worked fine on Mavericks. ???

It probably goes without saying that I had already tried rebooting the router before, without changing its broadcast channel. That did not help.

Having the same issues, and tried everything mentioned reported on the internet, I think it all boils down to problems with interference of routers. This also explains a lot of the supposed solutions. Airport picks a router and configuration, however, if there are multiple routers and settings to choose from, it can pick suboptimal configurations. This can result in degrading performance or even loosing connection.

If my hypothesis is true, then try your mac (book) on a location where there is little or no interference possible from other routers (can be difficult these days). You can also download and use a wifi explorer/sniffer that gives you all the routers in your neighbourhood.

I am no expert, but I think this could really be the issue.

All my wifi issues/problems are solely tied to having upgraded to Yosemite. All the same routers and devices around me are unchanged and it all worked fine under Mavericks.

Yes, but if they changed the configuration options of the wifi then this could become an issue. Just go to a place without possible interference and try then if the problem still persists. I have noticed that working in my hospital with lots of routers, connectivity is a huge issue, whereas, at home things run smoothly.

If this doesn't work out for you, I am wrong.

WIFI Problems 1-2 times at day. Bandwidth 5-20K ... 10.10.1 make it not better.

    Router: Fritz!Box 6490
