Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

run airport in terminal to find local channels

-I = info about your connection

-s = scan for local wifi channels

    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airp ort -I -s

The only BIG problem is that you cannot force Airport to select a specific channel or BSSID. Tried that, but Yosemite, being stubborn, switched right back to a channel with (I think) interference. In previous os x you could actually pick a specific BSSID.

    Hi, there:

I just wanted to say what has worked for me since I updated to Yosemite 10.10.1. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) that was having Wifi problems also. I went to System Preferences > Energy Saver and turned off the Wake for Wi-Fi network access. Since I did this my Wi-Fi problems have disappeared. Problems included disconnection every five minutes, slow downloads and disconnected downloads.

I know it may not be the standard solution for everybody but I wanted to help a few of you that may find this to work in your favor.

I have a slightly different problem.... My macbook pro has slow wifi connection 2.4 (0,5 mbps) and a better connection using 5G (20 mbps).

When I put my bluetooth off, my 5G connection drops to 10 mbps!  and my 2.4 goes up to 8 mbps!!  ????

It is my first macbook, I just bought it and it is the biggest piece of crap I ever had!!  I come from a normal windows laptop (an old one), and I NEVER had any kind of problems that big on a new windows release!!  Incredible!!

Everyone gives solutions, but no one has a real working solution!  Apple doesn't react at all!

Anyone interested in a brand new macbook pro???  I give you a nice price!!

If you're serious Sally, send me spec details. I am about to spend money on new RAM and SDD to upgrade an old MBP and might be better buying yours

Yeah! After update to 10.10.1 I have the same problem. When bluetooth is working, wi-fi is not working. Why? Apple, are you serious? Yosemite is real amazing OS. Most powerful! I love it! Sorry, guys, this is incredible

I have MacBook Pro 15'' retina (mid 2012)

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. So let me talk for a sec.

    1) I am a developer and use developer previews. I beta test for a lot of companies. I know of 3 companies which are participating SO actively in bug solving as Apple. Only 3.

    2) Based on THIS very thread, I received an email from Apple Care. They asked politely if I would be willing to participate in a telephone conversation so that they could gather material for a repro-case. I have had two conversations with them pertaining to THIS here very issue. So far. And I am VERY sure that they don't just call one person but many. I'm in Germany they in the U.S. I have yet to personally experience ANY company reaching out, internationally over the phone, to gather diagnostics to repro a bug. Based on what SOMEONE, in this case me, was writing on a public non-beta forum.

I am NOT a fanboy in any regard. I use what I think is best. NOT because it has a shiny surface or is packaged nicely. Be that Apple or Microsoft.

But to claim that Apple doesn't care about their product and simply don't react is simply put; not true and does not reflect reality.

Just so that you can understand HOW difficult it is to solve a bug like this one which is NOT occurring reliably. It has been 48 hours since I was asked to repro the case and the past 48 hours my Wifi has been working 100% as expected. And I am REALLY trying to repro. Set WLAN to 2.4 GhZ, connected 3 different bluetooth devices, moved as far away from Airport as I could, put iPhone next to MBP etc... ALL the things that would typically repro the case.. Only THIS time, the devil refuses to rear his face... I am putting the computer to sleep waking it... Nothing... WiFI and BT are 100% steady. I am sure that eventually it will happen again... And then I will send in the diagnostics...

So - as you can see it is not very simple to produce a clear-cut case and tell Apple; Do this and THAT will happen....

Such a scenario is a worst-case scenario. If you can't find whats broken - it makes it pretty impossible to fix... Even though you would like to.

Think about that for a minute before you jump to unreal conclusions !

I'm really pleased you have confirmed that Apple does monitor this community's discussions. Reassuring.

Thanks for your help!  I did a little more research and it turns out Photo Stream was the culprit.  I just imported a bunch of pics into iPhoto and Photo Stream was killing my network.

I, too, received an email and phone call from an Apple tech, following my couple of comments on this message board, yesterday. Spent almost two hours on the phone, and we went over everything - with me trying to explain what exactly has been happening and with him translating it all from Average User to People Who Know What They're Talking About.

First I couldn't decide if I should find the phone call and emails creepy and 1984-ish, but then I thought it was actually pretty darn cool that they'd reach out to a very average user (meaning that it's highly questionable whether my extremely limited knowledge and understanding of what's been going on with my MBP since installing Yosemite - other than "I can't use my wifi anymore, give me my wifi back, I need it, wawawaaaaaah!", - is going to get them even a millimeter closer to an eventual solution,) and invest quite some time and attention into trying to figure out what has been causing my particular issues (which is probably something just slightly different than what's been causing a lot of other people's problems.)

OK, that sentence is way too long... Anyway, my point is that while I cannot disagree with people who say that it wouldn't be insane of us to expect some sort of public acknowledgement of the problems, I can attest to the fact that they are, indeed, trying to fix the issues. I would think it would be highly unlikely that they'd be reaching out to and spending all this time chatting with random users, you know, just for the heck of it.

True and according to this site's stats, 1/4 million people are looking at Yosemite/wi-fi posts....worth the cost of a few phone-calls!

Hope my Tweet to Tim_cook helped

Good point.  It would be difficult to tally the possible combinations/ permutations reflecting the multiple network configurations a user has coupled with the multiple 3rd party apps sitting in the user startups.

    let's start a new thread:

In my experience, particularly with the "patched" version of the bug (i.e. the patch made it worse), is that I can leave the machine (mid 2009 MBP) running for hours with only imessage running and mail app running and everything appears fine. However, when I start using browsers, particularly when streaming videos and have several browsers open (I need this for work), I find that the connection disappears. I bought the new airport express last week to ensure this was not a router issue (previous airport/time capsule was 5 years old).

Trying to click on the airport icon and selecting (turn off/turn on etc) does not allow me to reconnect.  I have had some success using terminal to control it (networksetup -setairportpower en0 on; networksetup -setairportpower en0 off, etc).  That may work for a while and allow me to finish downloads etc. But a restart is generally required shortly afterwards.

Have also tried the "new location" strategy mentioned previously, deleting network config folder, PRAM & SMC resets, deleting all wifi networks. I haven't turned on bluetooth in months.

In summary, the wifi is most volatile when I am using multiple browsers and actively downloading/streaming/browsing. Seems most stable when it's not being actively used.
