Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

About 5 days I have no problems with wifi. What was done:

    1. Change wireless channel on router to Static, not Auto

    2. Go to Network Settings

    3. Choose Wifi connection and press minus at the bottom

    4. Press plus to create new wifi connection

    5. Press settings button near +-+ and choose Set Service Order

    6. Change WiFi position to the top of list

    7. Save settings

    8. Turn off mac book

    9. Press Shift+Control+Option+Power to reset SMC

    10. Turn on macbook

Before this I did ALL solutions from internet but it did not work. Please, try mine steps and give feedback for others.

I'm not sure is it important to complete all of this steps but I don't know exactly which step helped me.

I have this issue too. I have also been experiencing bluetooth issues. When I try to play music from my computer to my bluetooth speakers the sounds lags and skips significantly. At first I thought it was the speakers issue, but the bluetooth speakers work perfectly with my iphone and my friends 2009 macbook!! Has anyone else experienced poor bluetooth quality and connection after the Yosemite update??

I don't have any issues with my two new Imac retina.

Am I alone in that case ? My Apple Store told me that only the updated IOS have the problem, not the "Yosemite factory born" Macs.

It has been quite an education reading this thread. I appreciate all of the suggestions and reports about whether the suggestions work. I realize that there are nearly an infinite number of configurations, so it makes sense that some people are able to fix the problem. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those. I thought I would share my experience and update you as I proceed through my next steps.

    My Configuration

    • 15" Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2014)
    • Yosemite 10.10.1
    • Apple Airport Extreme (2nd Gen) (firmware version 7.6.4)
    • Linksys EA4500 (firmware version 2.1.41.162351)

    My Problems

    • WiFi disconnect randomly (not connected to access point at all)
    • WiFi stalls (no network activity possible, but connected to the access point)
    • WiFi slow performance

    Solutions Tried

    • Deleted WiFi adapter and readded
    • Removed all preferred WiFi networks
    • Deleted system config plist files from the Library folder
    • Disabled bluetooth
    • Disabled handoff/continuity
    • Disabled awdl0
    • Contacted Apple Support. They had me boot to recovery mode and test internet connectivity. Everything worked, but since the problem is intermittent, I don't think that's a good test. However, based on this, Apple asked me to do a clean install of Yosemite.

    Solutions to Try Next

    • Do a clean install of Mavericks and test. (Currently underway. Installation complete. I've been using the system for nearly 4 hours so far with rock solid WiFi.)
    • After sufficient testing with Mavericks (a couple of days, at least), do a clean install of Yosemite.
    • If problems return with Yosemite (I'm guessing they will, but I'm keeping an open mind), I'm heading to the Apple Store with multiple wireless diagnostic reports, the history recounted above, a copy of Mario Ciabarra's article, and (if someone can tell me how to easily print every page) a copy of this thread - or at least, a reference to it.

I think I've got a good plan of attack, but I welcome additional suggestions.

Interesting: I decided to short stroke my mac hdd, but in order to do that I needed to repair my drive using the disk utility.

(Side note: use the cd to do it, not when you are logged in or even using Recovery HD)

Anyway, the file that gave me problems and disk utility had to "fix" was discoveryd.

After the "fix," even though Yosemite runs a little faster now, wifi is acting up again.

But I still have my router reserving IPs, so even with wifi acting up I haven't needed to renew IP leases or turn Wifi on and off.

Wifi just sort of sputters and them seems to resolve itself after time, so Wifi isn't acting up a badly as it was without reserving IPs.

I plan to tweak discoveryd again today, but for now I thought maybe it might help sharing what I found.

    Hi Everyone,

I usually don't post but I can't help to think that there are other people wasting their time just like me.. reading forums, sites, and god knows what else.

Try the steps below. they seem to have done the trick for me hopefully they help you too!

To reset the network configuration in OS X, go to the /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder and remove the following files:

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

    original post: http://www.cnet.com/news/addressing-dropped-wi-fi-connections-in-os-x/

No, there is harm in deleting plist. (they will get recreated at startup, beware...all settings are wiped)

FYI. I've been running Mavericks all day and still no issues with wifi at all. I will probably try the clean Yosemite install tomorrow afternoon.

To reset the network configuration in OS X, go to the /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder and remove the following files:

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

I did this about 3 weeks ago. Fixed the wifi dropouts. No more problems.  Working normally since.

I am also having issues with wifi. I have tried every fix I can find online and nothing will make my wifi speed go over 54mbps. I have a Netgear AC1900 router and before Yosemite I would regularly get upwards of 500mbps. Every other device in my home works fine and achieves speeds much higher than 54mbps. I was hoping 10.10.1 would fix the issues, but it hasn't done anything. Why is Apple staying quiet regarding this issue?
