Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Interesting: I decided to short stroke my mac hdd, but in order to do that I needed to repair my drive using the disk utility.

(Side note: use the cd to do it, not when you are logged in or even using Recovery HD)

Anyway, the file that gave me problems and disk utility had to "fix" was discoveryd.

After the "fix," even though Yosemite runs a little faster now, wifi is acting up again.

But I still have my router reserving IPs, so even with wifi acting up I haven't needed to renew IP leases or turn Wifi on and off.

Wifi just sort of sputters and them seems to resolve itself after time, so Wifi isn't acting up a badly as it was without reserving IPs.

I plan to tweak discoveryd again today, but for now I thought maybe it might help sharing what I found.

Sorry, I accidentally clicked Reply before typing my last post.

Here is an update on: "Interesting: I decided to short stroke my mac hdd...wifi is acting up again,...I plan to tweak discoveryd again today,..." that I posted earlier today and accidentally reposted a moment ago.

It turns out discoveryd is okay, no need to tweak it.

ipv6 was the culprit, so I typed networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi in Terminal and bam! Internet is stable and fixed.

So, for me reserving ip addresses of devices that connect to the router AND turning off ipv6 worked (restoring the host file may have worked too)

again, I use a dlink router (dir-615) and have a macbook 5,2 (early 2009 model)

what didn't work: refreshing plist files, etrecheck, repairing permissions, and resetting PRAM and SMC

but I know that these may work for someone else though

Good for you, eas2156. Seems Yo10.10/ Discoveryd is handling IPv6 differently than Mavericks and older versions of OSX. And with some ISPs, IPv6 is not yet present or gets handled incorrectly. One more confirmation that this here issue has to do with a hard/software/ISP combination. Very difficult to reproduce in an ideal situation!

Hi, I also have a brand new Asus Router, (RT AC87U) however I found that my MBP worked fine but my wife's was unstable and dropped connection. The way round it I found was

    1) Delete all wifi networks from my wife's 13"Retina MBP

    2) On the Asus router set the SSID tp "networkname_2.4Gig" and "Networkname_5Gig" I kept the same WPA password for both

    3) Allow my wife's MBP to logon to the 2.4 gig network, but not the 5gig

    4) Allow my machine to logn to both, it will choose whats best but my wife is forced onto the 2.4

A bit of a Klutzy way of doing things, but until Apple come up with a firmware update for the wireless card or Asus do something with their router it seems a workable compromise, Also when it is fixed then I simply rename both networks to "Networkname" and let the MBP sort out which band is best

    HTH

My MB pro Retina mid 2014 had huge wifi issue's. It seemed as soon as I connected the bt mouse my wifi stopped working. I followed many of the solutions presented in this thread, but non helped a bit.

This morning I called Apple support and received the following instruction:

    - start in safe mode (hold shift all the way while booting until logon screen)

    - put local disk / library / preferences / system configuration (the whole folder 'system configuration', nothing more, nothing less, incl all files inside it) in the trash and empty trash

    - reboot

My laptop works so far. I put the system to sleep/standby and it keeps working, with the bt mouse. Speedtest keeps showing decent performance.

Hopefully it helps some of u too. Good luck.

Until I tried MiguelD's keychain suggestion Airport Utility would flash orange triangles and knock wifi off for a split second once a minute 24 / 7 since Yosemite upgrade.  That has not happened since I switched on allow all applications... thanks very much & cheers

Update on earlier troubles with 1 particular WiFi connection (work WifI, multiple routers / locations): I set up a call with Apple Support to discuss last Tuesday, following another week of interrupted connections. However, on the Tuesday (and thereafter) the work WiFi worked continuously! So I cancelled the call. To date it seems to be working fine (with the occasional slow down that could be provider related).

    Strange.

Still waiting for new access point to arrive to see is updating that end will help the wifi issue.

Will let you know as soon as.

In the mean time, I had a stable connection for about a week, no slowness to speak of, regularly checking with Speedtest.net proving the point. Then this evening BANG! no wifi! Did the usual, Turn off Wifi, Turn on Wifi. Nope. Turn off the wifi, forget the network in system preferences and rejoin entering in passwords etc, Wifi connected but no internet. Finally , forget network in system preferences, reboot macbook and rejoined Wifi. Hey Presto, everything back again.

Come on Apple team, lets either have a fix, OS upgrade or tell us what to do, if we need more up to date network devices then tell us a few quid doesn't matter if it fixes the issue.

Waiting on Access Point should be here Monday.

delete the ssid from the list of networks in settings.

connect to router by ethernet cable. log into router. change the 'channel' to something else.

disconnect ethernet cable. connect to the wifi again.

    worked for me anyway

    Quick update:

Apple is acknowledging this issue! Today about 4:30 eastern time I got the following message from Apple via email:

"You are invited to participate in the AppleSeed program and test a pre-release update to OS X Yosemite.  We received your name from the Wi-Fi Team.  We need your help testing Wi-Fi changes and trouble-shooting remaining issues.  If you accept, we will provide you with pre-release versions of OS X Yosemite updates to install and use. While trying out this software we ask that you provide us with your feedback. Our program includes a bug reporting system and an exclusive online discussion board community for our participants. Become a valuable part of the software development process, and help us make this software update its very best! Hi Doug. Great news! But what Apple really seems to be doing here is folding back to (partial) beta testing on an already released major version. Highly unusual. Nevertheless go for it, go!

Indicative of a premature release of 10.10.0 or 10.10.1, though. Never mind, they will find out in  the end.

    Wish I were testing...
