Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I have to concur with Ozzie that it's not entirely just wifi that is problematic. Though I do connect with wifi on my Mini Mac when my troubles were at their worst, my airport utility when opened would show I had no internet connection but my Airport Extreme showing connection just fine. The internet connection would drop off, come back on at will, rinse and repeat. I am on a stable connection now using the tips listed before of deleting the wifi entirely in the networks preferences and rebooting, then adding it back in (labeled wifi2, which it did by itself fortunately). That and opening the network settings, clicking wifi, and opening the "assist me" button, then after the location tab going to the next tab and shrinking down the window and leaving it alone. I don't DARE to touch anything now and the internet icon in airport utility has yet to drop and my wifi connection or internet connection (lights stay green) and everything is essentially as it should be. Sometimes it's very slow to send email or download and other times very fast, but overall I'm back up and running  although now I get nervous that at any given second my computer will be in the doghouse once again. I should also mention that I reverted via time machine to Mavericks (everything perfect) then back to Yosemite where I had to perform the above listed work arounds so hopefully a permanent fix will be coming along and soon!

You know the shame of all this is that if Steve was still around I dont believe this would have been allowed to happen. I love the mac and have been a user from the start my first Mac was a plus. I still love my latest purchase, it just so frustrating with the wifi. I waited for Yosemite to be released before my last upgrade to this Mac Pro + Retina (512) I was slightly disappointed that even buying it from the apple shop I have to upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite.

The frustration is the intermittent nature of the wifi issue, somedays it works fine from start to finish, another day it can take 15 mins to sort another day an hour. Continual wifi off, wifi on, remove remembered networks, restarts in various sequences.

Lets just all hope and prey that 10.10.2 resolves it for us all.

We love you Apple but I think we all don't like you much at the moment :-)

Regarding the Appleseed testing Apple is running (and no pun intended here) but I don't think you really caught my drift of what I said, rather than what I "said."

And obviously no one else has....

At the risk of jinxing it, for no apparent reason - I haven't changed anything; since I made the mistake of "upgrading" to 10.10.0, I had applied pretty much all the fixes that don't include messing around with anything in Terminal because I know absolutely nothing about it and I'm scared I'd make a fatal mistake, - I have had no drops for over four days now if my mid-2012 MBP running Yosemite 10.10.1 is in a certain place on my bed, facing a certain way. I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous, but as soon as I move it, the drops keep coming back. So, my MBP is pretty much a desktop ("bedtop") these days.

    It makes no sense.

I believe that those who know a million times more about this topic than I ever will, have already concluded that what many of us have been experiencing, isn't a wifi issue, per se, more like a network issue?

I am one of those who was in direct touch with an Apple tech following my cries for help on this message board and therefore received an invite to beta test the latest 10.10.2 version, but based on the unofficial reviews so far, I'd rather stay away from it for now.

I'm extremely happy to be involved in the beta.  I suggest you might enjoy getting involved also.

The network issues in Yosemite are many. And no 'one' issue is related to the other. All issues may occur simultaneously or they may not.

Thus it is totally impossible to know whether a fix is working or not.

Bluetooth IS interfering with a 2.4 GHZ WLAN. As SOON as it shares the same radio channel as the WLAN (Could take weeks before it happens, it could also theoretically never happen - like the Black/Red on a roulette) - the WLAN speed slows to a crawl and the ONLY remedy is to switch off BT which will fix the issue immediately --- IF and ONLY IF the Network Issue IS indeed caused by BT Interference.

But as I stated, the issues are many !!!

I have been running trouble free the past 3 weeks but today, again I was drowning in network drops. Caused by Bluetooth first and THEN a few hours later by the nasty DNS issue where I loose Internet all together...

I have been trying to trouble shoot this issue months before the official release of 10.10 and am now giving up. Fortunately I have two rMBP. One of them now has a Mavericks Install and is used as a backup for reliable internet connections. I use that whenever 10.10 falls short which it does whenever I need to work. SO basically I have given up on relying any on 10.10. Mavericks however is suffering as bad from the BT issue as 10.10.

To any new reader of this thread, I would like to advise you to NOT get into the Fix-trend and try to fix here and there. All fixes are temporary and your chances of a fix are just as good if you turn off your router, WLAN and CPU and reboot them all. No one, including Apple has ANY, even remote idea of the cause of these serious issues.... If anyone DID have an idea, there would have been a fix long ago... I am sure that eventually, there will be a permanent fix - but until then and if YOU rely on a working internet connection, stay VERY clear of 10.10 until you see a green Check Mark indicating a SOLVED on this very thread ;-)

    Oh, I agree with you

I just posted my solution in case anyone else was considering changing the airport card for a newer one - for me, it resolved the issue (now 3 days without a drop)

    1) I needed a reliable machine and the small cost was worth it, for me.

    2) I was also curious to work out where the problem lay - and it seems to be with my airport card - but why in just one location and when changing modem/router didn't affect it ? - odd

Apple seed requires confidentiality from the outset - from the invite e-mail as far as I know, and when you agree to participate you agree to confidentiality.

    Hi,

i jumped back in time and reinstalled Mavericks on all my machines.

    internet is flying along nicely.

LIfe is good again, back to being productive. I'm beach ball free and more importantly - Stress free.

it turns out that besides the obvious issues repeatidly voiced here that there are many applications and utilities that are not compatible with Yosemite. I just did an update with Yosemite because I trusted Apple. I usually take the clean install route. I never checked individual support for apps.

Lesson learnt, there is a behaviour in the software business - don't use the first release as its a public beta!!!

Anyway, I'm off to get more work done on Mavericks..... :-)

    Hi

I also agreed on invite to get into Apple's new compost bed too but so far no response from them... I have offered wireless diagnostic reports from this past month but they haven't bitten my arm off.

    Strange.

Well, I set aiport to be discovered by no one, this seemed to help. I was able to turn on my bluetooth mouse and get on the internet albeit slowly and often dropped, however this only lasted about a day. I'll have to see if I can get this to work again...

I concur with MortenJamesCarlsen. There is "more than meets the eye" deep rooted issues in Yosemite. I started my saga by renaming my .local in Sharing due to my Mini randomly renaming the .local Network at least two or three times a week. After which, it dumped a Recovered Files folder in the Trash Can - "A Document Being Saved By Storeasstd"--- ( psst, hey! Apple) about as many times as my .local Network was being renamed, Hmmm!? My Thunderbolt Display and Mini, both, ran hotter than with Mavericks. Seemed Ethernet and WIFI could not coexist and play nicely together - including Bluetooth. All the SMC resets and PRAM resets couldn't put Humpty together again. My late 2012 Mac Mini came with Mavericks so instead of goofin' round and beating my head with work-arounds, I reverted back to Mavericks 10.9.5. Wait for the GO! on Yosemite. I hope that OS X 10.10.5 will be everything they said it would be and more!!

My MBA (Mid-2012) has been useless since putting Yosemite on. WiFi will drop every few minutes. Quiet honestly I'm disgusted by Apple's neglect of this critical issue and am seriously considering putting this big paperweight on Craigslist and getting a Thinkpad, I can't get any work done on this machine.

I'll keep running Snow instead, no WiFi issues here. I've been following this thread from the beginning (really, out of sheer interest), but no common issue denominator yet.

    To be followed...
