Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

I agree with you on the band aid fixes. Obviously, according to the OSXDaily article following the link in Blower17's post, this problem has been snow balling since OS X Mountain Lion. It would seem that OS X is having trouble with saving System Configurations during "clean" installs and upgrades. Individual hardware drivers and Intel Chip Set drivers are not working well together in Unix. Apple is climbing Yosemite to get out of this valley. When Yosemite is done, it will be the most stable and best performer since Snow Leopard. Until that point I'm not knocking all of the hard work that all of the people are doing to just get stuff working, but, the permanent resolve is the weight that Apple has to bear at the moment. I am sticking to Mavericks. We all paid top dollar for a stable reliable machine with class support. I'm cheering for the Apple Team to "make this OS X work out of the box!"

Jeez, this is a good link! I hope it does not mean what I think it means: Yosemite scanning your hard drives and backups and double checking them with your iCloud account. If you have one, even. No wonder networks would be clogged, then! The solution seems to point to plain illegit backdoor behaviour! And would explain irregular and outrageous network traffic, too.

Sorry, I'm not too paranoid, but this command line solution set me off a bit.

Funny, as 14C81f made WiFi worse for me.  MUCH preferred 14C78c.

Guess we're not as close as I hoped with that kinda variation between us.

with the 10.10.2 (14C81f) third seed from dec 12, 2014 (pre-release)   my iMAC27" mid2011 wifi issues went away.

Hope they bring  a 10.10.2 OSX update to the appstore very soon.

I lost track of this thread at page 80 something.

Thought I would post my experience and I have been experiencing the same thing everybody else has.

About 20 different MACs on the network.  All working fine with ASUS RT-AC87U except for my 15" MacBookPro Retina (2011).  This 2011 works fine with the RT-AC87U in 10.9.  Clean install of Yosemite on external drive, same slow DNS resolution issue.  Boots back to 10.9, works fine.

Setup new AirPort Extreme (AC) and 2011 MBP works fine under 10.10 - so the issue for me seems to be localized to the MBP 15 with the ASUS RT-AC87U (latest firmware).  I have separate SSID for the 5GHZ band, I have way too man MACs for me to wipe the router and do a clean setup.  So there must be some sort of Apple specific calls on my 2011 for it to work with the Airport and not the ASUS.  Extremely fast on the AirPort, btw.

My 2 cents.  Hope it helps others.

Unfortunately, the exact same update doesn't work on my machine. So, maybe there getting close, but they aren't there yet.

From my experience with the last 2 betas on 2 iMac in 2 different places, it goes very well the very first days then it falls apart again.

I am in the same exact position as you are, nhcowboy.

On one hand, I am like a kid on Christmas morning to have received an invite to beta test (because "Yay, they are listening!" and I have never beta tested, well, anything at all,) but since I only have my one MBP and the unofficial reviews about all three betas have been mixed, I am scared to try, at this point.

After having applied pretty much all the "fixes" over the past couple of months, and for no apparent reason, I now have semi-stable connection in a certain part of the house (which is so much better than what it was before when my MBP was practically unusable, without wifi,) and since I am very average user with no real knowledge of what goes on under the hood, I'd rather wait...

This is a reply to no one in particular, I just wanted to mention that each and every time that I am suddenly unable to open any webpages or download mail (while having "full bars" on my little wifi icon,) it's the MCS Index that drops to zero. (It is normally between 1 and 13, with the Tx Rate lower and higher according to the MCS Index number.)

I have absolutely no idea what it means, but this is the only consistent thing I have noticed when it comes to my "wifi drops" (not even sure I should call them that, since my wifi signal never drops, per se.)

I did send this feedback to Apple Support a few weeks ago, but I can't recall if it has been discussed here yet, or if anyone has noticed the same.

The MCS index is a number that corresponds to a specific set of negotiated streams and data rate.  MCS index 0 is a 7mbps data rate, which is the lowest.  If you are not negotiating anything better then try looking at other factors such as access point placement, interfering devices, band and channel configuration, etc.  The 2.4GHz band is highly susceptible to interference from many other household devices and bluetooth, so if possible try to configure to 5GHz if practical (it depends on what other devices you intentionally are connecting like IP cameras, your TV and DVD player, Nest thermostat, etc and whether they support 5GHz), or configure different SSIDs on the different bands.  If you have persistent problems you might also look at using a WiSpy or other measurement device to detect and classify interference issues.

Also try monitoring using the Scan and Performance tools of the Wireless Diagnostics utility, as that will continuously show you the other SSIDs and channels, as well as your connected rate and signal quality.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this.

I am not sure what could be interfering with what; I moved my poor iPhone far from my MBP a long time ago (BT has been turned off on both since I installed Yosemite,) my Kindle has to sit in a far corner all by its lonesome, the particular corner of my bed where the connection seems to be the most stable is actually closer to my TV and DVR than other corners of my bed where I have a lot more drops, the microwave oven is nowhere near... And that's about all the devices I have.

I do see a few other wifi signals (I live in a quiet, residential neighborhood, so it's not even half of the signals I used to see at my old place,) and I have had separate partitions (is that the right word?) set for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for a long time. I have recently set both of them to static channels (ones that other signals I see, don't seem to use.) Is there anything else I can do with my very-average-user knowledge, to try and decrease potential interference? Never had any issues before Yosemite.

Guys I think I solved this problem. Just install Windows using bootcamp, forget about OS Yosemite and the WIFI will work fine! Seriously this problem is annoying. I was satisfied by turning of the bluetooth , but since the latest OS update there is nothing we can do to solve this issues. It seams to me that we are back in 1990 when we used dial up modems. If Apple does not solve this problem and fast, I think I'll return to Windows and Android phone and tab.

I'm a 30 year Mac user, and find myself resonating with Acko31. WiFI and even basic internet access to my university's network are both seriously impaired-with long, intermittent outages. (The PC users on the network are having no problems.) I did the Apple Hardware Test and it confirms my MacBook Air is just fine. These problems have only been since upgrading to OS X 10.10.1.

What Apple seems to have misunderstood in this Yosemite upgrade is that access to the Internet for email and web-browsing is so fundamental to computer use these days, that not having them is paralyzing. I was spending serious time today thinking about how best to go over to the "dark side" and buy a PC. I stopped when my internet access spontaneously returned. But how long I'll continue to have Internet is totally uncertain to me.

I have the same issues and I use an AirPort Extreme for my network. Try restarting your Mac before connecting to your home network every time. That works for me.

Don't go over to the dark side, but do what I did (or rather, what my husband did for me):  After watching me struggle with WiFi at home with my MacBook Pro after I upgraded to Yosemite, and again with the first patch after that-for whatever reason it worked fine here at work-when he had a day off, he borrowed it, took it to the Genius Bar and had it downgraded to Mavericks.  I haven't had any problems since.
